COVID-19 is a new disease that has not been previously identified in humans.
Rarely, animal coronaviruses can infect people, and more rarely, these can then
spread from person to person through close contact.

in Saudi Arabia
in 2012 and has since spread to
several other countries. Most
people
infected with MERS-CoV developed
severe respiratory illness.

SARS
SARS is caused by a coronavirus
called SARS-associated
coronavirus.
SARS was first reported in Asia in
February 2003. The illness

Recent evidence indicates that the virus can be transmitted to others

have not yet developed symptoms (pre-
symptomatic)

never develop symptoms (asymptomatic)

While experts know that these kinds of transmissions are happening
among those in close contact or in close physical settings, it is not known to what
extent. This means it is extremely important to follow the proven preventative
measures.

Human coronaviruses cause infections of the nose, throat and lungs.
They are most commonly spread from an infected person through:

respiratory droplets generated when you

close, prolonged personal contact, such
as touching or shaking hands

touching something with the virus on it, then
touching your mouth, nose or eyes before washing your hands

Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to get rid of germs in
most situations. If soap and water are not readily available, you can use an alcohol-
based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. You can tell if the
sanitizer contains at least 60% alcohol by looking at the product label.
