Description
Enter the quantity being measured. In the area of Length this filed is
called "Class" and specifies the type of artifact under calibration, for
example: "diameter standards", "end standards", "CMM artifacts".
Device under calibration. Item received by the customer
This field may be used to further specify the type of instrument to be
calibrated or the calibration method
The measurement range can be expressed explicitly or implicitly
(i.e. through a range of parameters) but never with a reference to
other services. Implicit specifications must provide enough
information in the parameters section so as to indicate the range of
validity of the uncertainty statement.

Examples of parameters are calibration conditions like ambient

temperature, a variable condition like frequency for AC electrical
quantities or a radionuclide for a CMC in radioactivity:
Parameter Specifications
---------------------- ----------------------------------------
Temperature 20 ºC
Frequency 10 Hz to 100 Hz
Co-60 rectangular, planar sources

Use separate lines if specifying more than one parameter. Never

imbed more than one line in a single cell.

Provide an unambiguous uncertainty statement. Examples are a fixed

value, a range of values or a formula in terms of the measurand or a
parameter. When the measurand and the uncertainty cover a range
of values, it is assumed that linear interpolation can be used to find
intermediate values.
The coverage factor and the level of confidence should be consistent
with an assumed distribution shape. Normal values are 2 and 95 %,
respectively, but other values may be given if it is customary in a
given metrology field and the issuing laboratory has enough
information on the measurement distribution.

Write "Yes" or "No". This is especially important when both, the

measurement and the uncertainty levels are given as percentages but
is should never be left blank.
Indicate the standard that is used to carry out the calibration or
measurement.
Provide the name(s) or acronym(s) of the NMI(s) that hold(s) the
primary standard(s) from which the standard specified in the previous See special instructions for RI
cell obtains traceability to the SI. Additionally, indicate the names of
intermediate laboratories if this traceability is not obtained directly
from the above-mentioned primary NMI(s).
Provide the name of comparisons as designated by the organizers.
Comparisons listed in Appendix B are preferred but CC working
groups on CMCs may accept other types of comparisons.
Information listed here will be published with the CMC. Examples are
restrictions on the service scope requested by reviewers. After 24
May 2004 the KCDB adds the publication date in this field. Rows
corresponding to CMCs to be deleted from Appendix C are shaded in
pink and inlcude in this field the comment "To be deleted from the
KCDB".
Each laboratory can choose how to identify its internal service
identifiers. Examples are a simple consecutive number or the NMI
catalogue number. Internal identifiers that include blank characters or
a series of words should be avoided.

Formatting Instructions

GENERAL FORMATTING CONSIDERATIONS

All cells in the white area should have the following format:
·     Number: Text
·    Horizontal alignment: Centred
·     Vertical alignment: Top
·    Text control: Wrap
·     Font: Arial 10 or Symbol 10 (for Greek letters)
·     Style: Normal for all fields but quantities in Italics (e.g. “L” for length) (never use italics for units)

NOTE: Do not use the "percentage" or "scientific" formats. Formatting all cells in text ensures that the informati

Translate all words into English.

Use a period "." as the decimal separator rather than a comma ",".
Avoid abbreviations. For instance, write "relative" instead of "rel.".
Textual descriptions begin with a capital letter but no other capital letters should be used in the same cell,
instance "Relative AC/DC voltage difference", but not "Relative AC/DC Voltage Difference").
Specifications of parameters should never begin with a capital letter (this case is very rare since the paramete
consist of value ranges).
Do not insert unneeded blank characters to improve the appearance of the cells. For example, do not write "
to make the "100 mm" appear well-centred in the cell.
Never use the semicolon ";" inside a cell (this may be interpreted as a cell separator when importing the file int
however, use the colon ":" and the comma ",".
Do not imbed returns, spaces or tabs in a single cell to force word wrapping, even if it appears to improve th
never use the function "Alt+Return" (it inserts a "carriage return" inside an Excel cell).

LINE AND CELL SEPARATIONS

Multiple entries in a single cell must be separated vertically into separate cells and cells must not be merge

In these cases:
·      use only one measurand range per CMC and repeat all other relevant information;
·      place each parameter and specification in its own cell.
See the "Formatting Examples" worksheet
Only one service category should be written in the appropriate cell. If the CMC line corresponds to two serv
CMC line should be repeated twice with two different service numbers. Do not add any blank character before
number (i.e., never write "2.1. 3").
Do not add lines to a CMC for information in the blue or yellow sections. Write all items in the same cell or
Otherwise the file will not be correctly imported into the database.

WRITING NUMBERS AND UNITS

Superscripts and subscripts can be used, but not for numbers (especially not for powers of ten, see instructio
in the expression of units such as "m/s2". Subscripts can be used in quantities such as "HCB".
A blank character may be used in a complicated unit [for example "µW/(V A)"]. In such a case the blank cha

the database; it is better to insert a blank character or to leave it blank).
If a unit like "dB" needs a reference value this should be written in parenthesis. For example: “dB (referenc
When writing numbers use the scientific notation as often as possible in the format "YE-XX", where:
·   "Y" is a number that may include decimals using the point "." as the decimal separator.
·   Do not separate the number "Y" from the exponent "E-XX" by a blank or any other character.
·   Always write the part "-XX" with three characters (and not two): a "-" or "+" sign and two integers (for in
expressions such as "1E-9" for "1E-09", or "4.23E04" for "4.23E+04"). The sign "-" is obtained in Arial as a sho
Do not use "±" in the uncertainty column; "±" is reserved for ranges in the specification of parameters.
The "±" sign may be obtained by typing "ALT+0177".
Do not use a blank character in the multiplication of a number by a quantity (thus, write "0.24L" and not "0.24 L"
