Unit 102096 RT&L1 Week 3 Tutorial Activity Sheet

Title Exploring teacher effects for mindset interventions outcomes in seventh

grade science classes
Authors J. A. Schmidt, L. Shumow & H. Kackar-Cam
Journal Middle Grades Research Journal
Peer Reviewed? Yes. By university faculty, middle level education researchers, and middle
grades teachers.
Variables/Concepts Independent: Mindset intervention, Dependent: Malleability of
intolerance.
Design Rating of instructional activities, via interviewing teachers and students.
Observational event sampled field notes.
Sample 363 seventh grade students, 4 teachers, within 14 science classrooms.
Results Students of both teachers developed stronger beliefs about the
malleability of intelligence after participating in the intervention.
Donna’s students’ achievement increased during the intervention and
maintained those increases through follow-up whereas Celia’s students’
did not.
Conclusion/Implications Teacher mindset feedback, teacher involvement in mindset
for practice given by intervention, instructional practices, teacher characteristics

CHECKLIST FOR EVALUATING… (These points are not exhaustive and some lend themselves better to
either a qualitative or a quantitative approach)

METHODS

For experimental design research

 Is the test population clearly stated? Is it appropriate for the experiment? Should it be
larger? More comprehensive?
 Is the control population clearly stated? Are all variables controlled? Should it be larger?
More comprehensive?

For other research

 Who is being asked to participate/contribute to data collection and why? Is there a strong
case provided for why these individuals are the best participants for this work?

For both
 Are methods clearly described or referenced so the research could be repeated? Are any
data collection materials clearly described and, where appropriate, referenced?
 Are all statements and descriptions concerning the research design, recruitment of research
participants, data collection procedure and materials included in this section?

RESULTS

Quantitative
 Are the results clearly presented with supporting statistical analyses and/or charts and
graphs (when appropriate)?
 Are all statistical analyses appropriate for the situation and accurately performed?

Qualitative
 Do the authors transparently present their thematic analyses of their qualitative data
sources, including the (theoretical) texts/concepts/ideas which informed their analyses?
 Are the results clearly presented with supporting quotes, images, excerpts, thematic
analyses (when appropriate)?

DISCUSSION

 Are all results discussed?

 Are all conclusions based on sufficient data?
 Are appropriate previous studies integrated into the discussion section?
 Have the authors identified limitations of the study?
 Do the recommendations make sense?
 Are the recommendations too overarching when you consider all of the above?
