Book/Author: Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo

Academic Vocabulary:
1) Winn-Dixie – Winn-Dixie is the name of the dog that was found in this story. It is also the
name of the local grocery store that the characters go to.
2) Preacher- A Preacher is a person who preaches, most usually a religion. In this story, the
Preacher works for a church.
3) Missionary- A person, like a Preacher, who goes to another country to do service or spread
their religion.

Six questions from Bloom’s Taxonomy:

Level 1:
1) Tell in your own words why Opal addresses and thinks of her dad as “The Preacher”…
The figure of her Dad is an important role. It is very unusual for a young girl to address her dad
as something besides dad, so I think that it is crucial that students comprehend the reasoning of
why Opal addresses her dad as so.
2) What happened after Opal shouted Winn-Dixies name from the tailor?
This is the point in the chapter where the story begin to climax, as Winn-Dixie wa finally
introduced to the Preacher. This is when he gives into the dog. He agrees to let Opal keep
Winn-Dixie after they meet in the trailor, which is a crucial part of the book.
Level 2:
3) Who were the main characters in this story?
Opal mentions a few different people, but there are really only two humans and a dog in this
chapter of the story. It is crucial that students can recall who the main characters’ in the story
are, because they are central to the development of the story.
4) In your own words, retell the story of the Preacher agreeing to let Opal adopt Winn-Dixie.
This is the most important part of the story. It was the ending of the story, so asking students to
retell this part will assure that they have a clear understanding of what happened in the
chapter.
Level 5:
5) How would you deal with finding a stray dog?
This question puts the reader into Opal’s shoes, as she was dealing with finding a stray dog and
wanting to keep it. Dogs get loose all of the time, and I am sure that most students from the
United States have seen a stray dog roaming the streets. This question allows for context within
the book to apply to a possible real world situation. Students must critically think about what
they would do if they found a stray dog.
Level 6:
In your own opinion, is the Preacher excited to get a new dog?
Though the Preacher did agree at the end to get a new dog, he begin by telling Opal that there
was no need for a dog. The dialogue between Opal and the Preacher displayed that the
Preacher was not too pleased about the new dog. I think it is important to ask the students this
opinion because it is evaluating the emotions of the Preacher.

Student Voice Q:
For the practice of marking up long sentences, I am going to ask my group how we would like to
mark them up. There are multiple options, specific parts in the word can be underlined,
highlighted or circled. Allowing students to chose which way the marking of the sentences
occurs may help the students comprehend the important parts of the stances that are marked
up. Assigning different shapes and colors to different subjects, actors, verbs, ect. In the story
may help students visualize the important parts easier. This allows for student creativity to
help them understand the content, because different features will be marked in different ways
decided by the student.
