NATIONAL HEALTH EDUCATION STANDARDS: The National Health Education Standards (NHES)
can be found at https://www.cdc.gov/healthyschools/sher/standards/index.htm. The NHEs
were created to assure and support health for student in the United States, preschool to 12 th
grade. The NHES is a strategic framework for health educators. The NHES were first published in
1995. There are multiple helpful components how it would help me meet standards in my
future health education instruction. There are resources to selecting and designing curricula.
Selecting a curricula can help meet the standards because many curricula are intentionally
made to meet the standards. There are also many benefits to designing ones own curricula, and
there are resources here for that as well. There are instructional resources, since a majority of
the progression of learning occurs during instruction, this site is very beneficial because there
are may instructional resources provided. There are also resources to assess students on their
health education progresses and achievements in learning. All of the components of the NHES
standards will help me support my future student’s health education and meet all set
standards.
Washington State Learning Standards- Health & PE: The Washington State Learning Standards
for Health & PE can be found at http://www.k12.wa.us/HealthFitness/Standards.aspx. Since I
plan on education in Washington State, I think that it is necessary that I include the Washington
State Learning Standards for Health & Physical Education. The Washington State Learning
Standards for Health & Physical Education cover grades K-12. It can be found in Washington
state legislation under RCW 28A.150.2. The standards for health and physical education were
adopted in Washington State in 2016. Since these are the standards, this website elaborates in
detail on the critical parts I must know for future health education. There is a very helpful
introduction that gives a great overview of the standards which I find very useful as a future
teacher. There are many specific supports for standard instruction. I find supports for health
education with focuses on sexual health, there are lesson plan examples, lesson plan templates,
learning standards and assessing students. This website will be an essential resource when I am
teaching health education.
Dietary Guidelines of America (Eighth Edition): The Dietary Guidelines of American (Eighth
Edition) can be found at- https://health.gov/dietaryguidelines/2015/guidelines/ Chapter Six
focused primarily on nutrition for students. A healthy youth equates to a health America, and I
think that is one of my biggest take-away’s from this chapter. This is the eighth edition of the
dietary guidelines in the United States. The Dietary Guidelines are created and implemented by
the government. Each chapter hones in on a different area of nutrition. There is a focus on
healthy eating patterns, and how and independent person can use the key elements of healthy
eating, as well as how to align and support others around with a healthy diet. This is an
extremely detailed, yet easy to comprehend manual about eating healthy in the United States.
As someone who has taken nutrition classes and who is interested in nutrition, I think that this
is an awesome resource to use for health education. Since the National Health Education
Standards, as well as the Washington State Learning Standards for Health & PE require nutrition
education to occur within health education, this is a great resource to support the specific
nutrition instruction. Due to the crisis of overweight and obese citizens, it is important that
schools educate students on nutrition. Nutrition is extremely influential on overall health, so it
is important that the youth of America are completely aware of nutrition.
American School Health Association: The American School Health Association can be found at
http://www.ashaweb.org/. The American School Health Association focus on transforming
schools into places where students learn in both a health and safe environment, supporting
coordinated school and community support systems. This is a health education association
which health educators can join. There ae many resources that are provided in the American
School Health association that help connect educators. There are resources for teaching, and
continuing education. Here, there are many availabilities to connect and help support the
standards. There is a journal for school health that is written by the American School Health
Association. As a future health educator, this journal will provide new and meaningful
information in the health education field. There is a career center on this website that helps
connect health educators with jobs, which is very useful. There are awards and scholarship
opportunities, which may help schools and benefit standards. There are many events listed on
the website. This seemed to be one of the most official associations specifically for school
health educators. This website could help me meet standards in multiple ways. If I end up
teaching health as I desire to, I intend on becoming a member of this site.
Society of Health and Physical Educators: The Society of Health and Physical Educators can be
