“When I am with you, we stay up all night.

When you're not here, I can't go to sleep.

Praise God for these two insominias!
And the difference between them.”
Rumi is known for being one of the most popular poet. He had written a lot of poems as

well as other kinds of literature. One of his works is Music Master which is divided into different

fragments. Just like Rumi’s other works and writings, Music Master also tackles love to other

human beings and faith to the divine.

I chose one fragment of Music Master that will be subject to my analysis about its

connection to love and faith. The fragment that I chose was the one that is mentioned above. This

part shows how fascinating and powerful love is. It talks about both the presence and absence of

someone. In the first line, it can be seen that when you love someone, the presence of that

person keeps you alive as if feeling of lack has no room in your heart. It shows that when you are

with someone that you love, instead of feeling the tiredness, deprivation or any negative vibes,

you feel fine and blissful. Even if several hours have already passed, you are still enjoying every

minute and you are still craving for more moments to create. On the second line, the effect of

absence of someone that we love is demonstrated. The absence of our beloved can affect us just

like how their presences give impact in our life. Even if it is hard to admit, when you fall in love,

you become more dependent on that person day by day in a sense that when he is not around,

you feel restless. Even if it is hard to acknowledge, being away with your beloved makes you

somehow incomplete. However, this fragment shows the beauty of both presence and absence.

One thing is a blessing and other thing is a blessing in disguise. Either of these two make us

alive. In the last two lines, it can be seen that a lover appreciates the presence and absence of his

other half because both of these lead to deeper love and affection. The feeling of having someone

beside us can give us extreme energy and enthusiasm. On the other hand, feeling of longingness
when someone is not around make us think and remind ourselves how beautiful the presence of

our partners that make us realize to do not taken them for granted. Indeed, love is so powerful in

a way that both presence and absence of someone can develop deeper intimacy, admiration and

love to our partners.

Aside from exemplifying how powerful love is, the fragment stated above can also show

how wonderful our connection to the divine is. The first line shows the beauty of the divine’s

presence. It demonstrated that the worthiest moment in our life is the moments that we share

with God. It shows that His presence is the most beautiful present or gift that we can receive. The

divine’s presence undeniably brings peace, comfort and several reasons to keep going. On the

other hand, the second line shows how worthless we are if we do not have the divine in our side.

Not feeling the presence of the divine can totally makes us weak and miserable. When we feel

lost and far away from the divine, we deceive ourselves by convincing our own hearts that we

are something even though we are totally nothing. Indeed, the first two lines show that with the

power of divine, I am capable of anything and without Him, I can do nothing. However, the

fragment explained that both side can transmit positive things through last two lines. When we

feel the presence of the divine, we appreciate everything that it brings. That appreciation leads to

deeper love and willingness to know Him more. On the other hand, when we feel the absence of

the divine, we are being reminded how limited we are as a person in a way that we need a true

and powerful Person for the rest of our life. Once we accept and acknowledge how imperfect and

inadequate we are as a person, we become more willing to follow someone who has vast and

unlimited power.
All in all, the Music Master just like Rumi’s other masterpieces show the power of faith

to the divine and love for other human beings in a way that the presences and absences of these

things both bring impact on our existence.
