The Broad (Oligo-Miocene) Volcanic Plateau and Associated Shields covered approximately 25% of Ethiopia's landmass with a thick pile of basalt lava flows from multiple volcanic centers that erupted over a large range of ages and covered an area of at least 600,000 square kilometers, around two-thirds of the country's surface.

Geology and Stratigraphy
The area of Volcanic Plateau covered about 25% of Ethiopia land-mass. It has a thick monotonous, rapidly erupted pile of locally deformed, flat lying basalts consisting of a number of volcanic centers with an area covered at least 6 x 105 km2 (around two-third surface of the country) with different magmatic character and with a large range of ages.
