Professor of policy analysis and management found that 4.5% of inmates who spent time in
isolation, even for just a day, died within 5 years of being released, 60% higher than those who were not
placed in solitary. The study observed Danish prisons and jails between 2006 and 2011 and included more
than 14,000 people. The study showed that those placed in solitary were mainly younger inmates that were
serving longer sentences. By reviewing the government registers to confirm the date and cause of death, it
was established that the majority of these deaths were caused by suicide, violence, or other non-natural
causes.
