Writing a Conclusion

There are 3 types of conclusions you can use in a compare and contrast essay. Your conclusion can
give the reader a recommendation, explains why the comparison is important, or states the writer’s
opinion. Here is an example of each.

1. This conclusion gives a recommendation.

Both Taste of Persia and Antonio’s are excellent restaurants with delicious food. And choosing a
restaurant for dinner is a tough decision, so why not try them both?

2. This conclusion explains why the comparison is important.

Because of their similarities in colour and shape, it is easy to confuse the venomous coral snake with
the scarlet king snake. However, knowing the difference between the two can be a matter of life and
death for hikers who visit areas where coral snakes live.

3. This conclusion states the writer’s opinion.

Mountain biking and skateboarding are extreme sports that get you moving outside. Whether you
want to tear through park trails on a mountain bike or swoosh around a skate park on a skateboard,
both sports are fantastic to try.
