  Saturn transits a house/zodiac for 2 ½ years and completes its one full cycle in 30 years. Whenever Saturn
transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd houses from the janma rasi(natal moon sign) it is called as sade-sati, Ealarai naatu
sani or 7 ½ Saturn period. ‘Sade-sati’ literally means 7 ½ years. Anybody who has 7 ½ Saturn period becomes
lazy. He would lack concentration, poor memory, delay in completing even a simpler task, unclean, living in dirty
environments, lack of interest in grooming oneself, being anemic, lack of energy, pessimistic thoughts, in-
different opinions with relatives and friends, financial troubles and un-happy environments are the general effects
of sade-sati period. Everybody undergo three 7 ½ Saturn periods in their life. The first cycle of 7 ½ Saturn
periods which occurs within the 30 years of age is called as mangu sani. The second cycle comes after the age
of 30 and is called as Pongu sani. The third cycle is called as Marana sani.

I-CYCLE: MANGU SANI The first cycle is called as the mangu sani. In the first cycle the health of the child would
be affected. He would not listen to the words of family members and will involve in immoral activities. His
education will be affected. Though the first phase does not do good to the child this phase would give more
fortune to the father.

II-CYCLE: PONGU SANI The second cycle is called as the pongu sani. The second phase will do good to the
native, but his father will be affected by the Saturn. The native will acquire wealth and good events will happen
during the second cycle of the 7 ½ Saturn period.

III-CYCLE: MARANA SANI The third cycle of Saturn is called as marana sani. During the third cycle, he might
face lot of health problems or death like agonies. Even death may happen if the dhasa bukthi is also unfavorable.
This 7 ½ Saturn period is further broken in to three phases based on the position of Saturn from the natal moon.
In the 12th house it is called as viraya sani. Janma sani in the 1st house and kudumba sani or padha sani in the
2nd house.

PHASE I: VIRAYA SANI If the Saturn enters the 12th house from the natal moon/ janma rasi, then the period of
Saturn (sade-sati) starts and the first 2 ½ year is called as viraya sani period. During this period one suffers a lot
financially. Fruitless travels, roaming around aimlessly, Loss of prestige and bad name. Children lack
concentration and face memory problems. They become poor in studies and start disobeying parents. Debt, loss
of wealth, sleeplessness may also arise. Though financial position gets affected, they get money through some
means for a better survival. Few people in india believe that, a person would be in the clutches of Saturn if the
crow hits a person at his back or in his head.

PHASE II: JANMA SANI The second 2 ½ year is called as janma sani period. One gets affected physically
during this period. Mental worry, Indifferences with spouse, Problems in job/ business. De-promotion or problems
with higher officials or transfer in job. Staying away from home leaving all the family members happens.

PHASE III: PADHA SANI OR KUDUMBA SANI This is the last phase of sade-sati. Problems with family
members, financial problems and legal problems in severe cases will happen during this period. Accident,
fracture or injury in the leg might happen during Padha sani period. The family members in the family will be
seriously affected if more than two person in a house has sade-sati period simultaneously. This rule does apply
for astama-sani also. In such a case, To protect yourself from the malefic effects of Saturn, it is advisable that
any one from the home stays away either in hostel or in a relative’s house. Though this suggestion looks strange,
this has worked for many by experience.

Other Phases of Saturn: Astama-sani, Arthastama-sani Beside the 12th, 1st and 2nd positions, Saturn gives
more malefic effects similar to the sade-sati in 8th and 4th positions. If Saturn transits the 8th house from the
natal moon(janma rasi/moonsign) it is called as astama-sani. Its period is for 2 ½ of years but gives more malefic
effects than the sade-sati. If the Saturn transits the 4th house from natal moon it is called as artha-astama-sani,
as the name indicates, artha (half), astama(eight). This period gives half the malefic effects of astama-sani.

Exceptions on malefic-effects Transit of Saturn such as 7 ½ Saturn period or astama-sani doesn’t harm people
born in Libra and Taurus moon signs because Saturn is the yogakaraka for Libra and Taurus. Transit of Saturn
doesn’t harm Capricorn and Aquarius moon signs because Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius. Saturn doesn’t
give much harm to people whenever it transits Libra (Saturn’s exaltation house) and Aquarius (Saturn’s Moola
trikona house) Whenever Jupiter aspects Saturn in its transits, malefic effects of Saturn will be reduced Sade-sati
doesn’t harm much if it transits the stars of venus (bharani, puram, pooradam) and the stars of its own (Pushya,
Anuradha or U. Bhardrapada /poosam, anusham, uthratathi) Sade-sati and astama-sani doesn’t harm much if in
sarva-ashtaga-varga, the 12th, 1st, 2nd and 8th houses from the natal moon has got more bindus (more than
28). If the dhasa bukthi is good, Saturn transits doesn’t harm much. But the native gets all the benefic effects of
good dhasa-bukthi only after a long struggle or after a delay. 7 ½ Saturn period and astama sani gives more
malefic effects to leo, cancer and scorpio and aries moon signs. But if they are born in any of the stars of venus
or Saturn, it doesn’t harm much.

Ashtakavarga : As per Ashtakavarga Sade Sati result is assessed beautifully.

Sarvashtakavarga : In this method the entire 7 ½ year period is divided into 3 nearly equal
periods. If the 12th, 1st and 2nd and houses from the Moon all have high benefic bindus
(above 28) then the entire period of 7 ½ years goes well. If one house has 28 below points
then when Saturn will transit that house, the period of 2 ½ years will give undesirable
experience. In short, the more points, the better result, the lesser points, the worse result.

Bhinnashtakavarga of Saturn: Bhinnashtakavarga  of Saturn gives fair idea of good or

worse result of sade sati. The sign having four or more bindus in Saturn's
Bhinnashtakavarga will provide  good result during Sade sati. If the three relevant signs have
more than 4 points for example 6, 7 or 8 bindus, the Sade-sati can be very good.

Bhinnashtakavarga of the Moon : Likewise, Bhinnashtakavarga  of Moon also should be

seen.

Bindu by Saturn for the Moon : In the Moon's Bhinnashtakavarga and Prastarachakra, if in
the relevant signs Saturn contributes a bindu then Saturn will not be inimical to the Moon
and experience during Sade sati period will not be bad.

Sadhe Sati analysis on Kakshya level: Astrologer attempts to weigh the Sade Sati result
minutely on considering Saturn transit in Kakshya (3 degre 45 minute). In the period of 7 ½
years Saturn transits 3 x 8 = 24 kakshyas. Prastarachakras of Saturn and moon are checked
to see whether Kakshya lord has contributed a bindu in the relevant sign or not. If there is
point, Saturn transiting period  in that Kakshya will be good.    Presence of a bindu in the
relevant kakshya is indicative of good time.

Transit of other major planets: During the period seven and a half years, transit of other
planets particularly slow-moving planets, must be seen.  If Jupiter's (or Rahu's and Ketu's)
transit results are favourable, Sade sati can't be too adverse.

Dasha-Bhukti: Astrologer must not be oblivious about Dasha Period. If the dasha is good,
Sade sati can't be too bad. If the dasha and Sade-sati both are bad then only the full force of
evil Sade-sati is felt. If both are good then Sade-sati is a period to look forward to.
 
Besides above, Moon’s position must be seen in the natal chart. If moon is in Dusthan (6, 8
& 12), Sade Sati effect will be worse. If moon is well placed and bereft of malefic influence,
native experiences comparatively better results.

Further, if Saturn is yogkaraka in the chart, its sade sati or dhaiya will not be so bad even
result will be nice, if things are ideally favourable.  Simultaneously, Tattwa of Ascendant also
be seen.  If it belongs to Fiery signs -Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, the Sadhe-sati will be
adverse. The reason for this is that only for Fiery rashis, neither Saturn nor the Moon are
trikona lords. When either of them is a trikona lord, Sadhe-sati does not deliver very bad
results.
