Maths Monday 18.11.

19

LI: In Maths we are learning to put objects into groups and find other groups with the
same number of objects
SC: I am successful when I can…
• Group my smarties into colours
• Count how many smarties I have of each colour
• Find another group that has the same colour and number of smarties as me

Warm up: Ask students to stand up and form groups of 4. Ask how many students have
brown eyes in each group. Get them to find another group with the same amount of people
with brown eyes. Then change to a different colour.

Introduction:
• Model the activity – have students sitting on the floor. Empty packets, group
smarties in patty cups (8), count the number of smarties in each group with students;
record this on the teacher data worksheet table.
Body:
• Give pairs of students a packet of smarties each and 8 patty cups, get them to group,
count and record on their tables. Students put their hands on their head when they
are finished and the teacher comes around to check their understanding and provide
feedback.
• Explain how they will walk around the room with their data sheet and record other
pairs of students who had the same colour and number of smarties as them.

Conclusion:
• As a class ask students to stand up and share how many of each colour and who had
the same. Teacher collects student data sheets to check understanding of equal
groups of the same colour
• Review LI and SC

Resources:
• Whiteboard and marker
• 13 packets of smarties
• 104 patty cups
• 12 worksheets for data collection plus teachers
• Pencils, pens

Language:
• I am grouping together
• I am making a group of all the smarties that are the same colour
• I have found a group that has the same colour and number of smarties
Maths Tuesday 19.11.19

LI: In Maths we are learning to put the information we collected into a graph
SC: I am successful when I can…
• Show on a graph how many of each colour I had
• Identify if any groups are equal regardless of colour
• Identify which group is the largest
• Identify which group is the smallest

Warm up: get students to stand up and form groups according to their eye colour. Ask
groups to check everyone has the same eye colour and make changes if necessary. Ask a
student from each group to count how many is in their group and write this on the
whiteboard in a table format. Ask the students if there are any groups with the same
number of students in it, which group is the largest and which is the smallest.

Introduction:
• Model the activity- have students sitting on the floor. Use the teacher data
worksheet table to help you put the information into the bar graph drawing your
smarties with coloured pencils. Then cut a strip of coloured paper to represent the
group of smarties and paste it over the top. Model the strategy of putting your finger
at the top of the coloured strip and travelling across the line to identify how many
smarties are in that group.

Body:
• Give pairs of students their data sheets back and a blank bar chart. Get them to draw
their smarties with coloured pencils on the bar graph first and then use the coloured
strips of paper, scissors and glue to create their groups. Students put their hands on
their head when they are finished and the teacher comes around to check their
understanding and provide feedback.
• Staple a sticky note onto their data sheet to record if any groups are equal regardless
of colour, which group is the smallest and which group is the largest.

Conclusion:
• Ask a student to come up and show the class how they use the travelling strategy to
work out how many smarties are in each group
• Ask another student to identify 2 or more groups on their bar chart with the same
number of smarties
• Ask a different student to identify which group was the largest and which group was
the smallest
• Review LI and SC and collect students work

Resources:
• Whiteboard and marker
• Coloured pencils
• Coloured strips of paper
• Scissors & glue
• Blank bar graphs and data worksheet tables
• Sticky notes
