By tindsPerann Went to add instant pizzazz to your projects, with a big hit of color and texture, no fancy stitchwork required? All it takes are a few simple tricks to give plain crochet major surface appeal. ‘These embellishment techniques work best on solid single crochet, a fabric that forms a grid that makes it easy to add embroidery and more. Be sure to block your work before you get started as these effects may not stretch the same way as crocheted stitches. Embroidered Flowers Embroidering onto erochet is easy, and it opens up a world of ereative possibilities Almost any yam or embroidery floss will work: experiment with light materials fora delicate effect, oF chunky yarns for a bold statement. Tn the sample at right, we're working the lazy daisy stitch. As its name implies, this technique isan eagy way to make flowers without alot of fuss. Begin by thread {ng doubled 22° length of yarn through a yarn needle Insert the needle from back to front at the spot where you would like the center of the flower tobe, Pall the yara through, leaving 4" tail on the wrong side to weave in later. Leaving a 2° loop of yarn on the right side ofthe work, thread the needle hack through the same space you started, Next, at the point where you want the petal to ‘end, bring the needle back up through tothe right side ofthe work ard loop the reserved yern around it (fig. a). Bring the yarn over the loop, then insert the needle ‘back through the seme hole to secure the petal (fig. b).Insest the needle through the ‘enter hole again and repeat the process foras many petals as desired (fig. c). By Maya Mackowiak Elson Looking at Todd Paschall’s work today, you would probably never guess he spent many of his early stitehing years making endless svatches. "My sister taught me to crochet when Iwas 17 and I'd do itwhile I watched basketball. For along time, 1 just practiced my stitehes for fan.” ‘But when Paschall’s son was born 18 years ago and the newborn pictures arrived, he was struck with an idea—eould ‘he crochet a portrait that truly captured a person? “I knew it would be difficult,” he says, “and I thought it would bea good challenge for me.” He started experimenting with some ‘hing stmapler than a photograph—the image on a king of spades playing card. Paschall drew it out on simple graph paper and then hegan painstakingly crocheting, ‘counting stitehes and rows, stopping fre- quently to take notes. After several inches he realized ithe kept going, itwould have covered a king-size bed! Paschall wasn’t discouraged. He simply tied a different approach: computers. ‘Though he didn’t have any software train- ing, Paschall gota few books and taught bimself to write a pattern-generating pro ‘gram, The first erochet projects resulting from these patterns were “cartoonish,” he 16 cochet today © march / apel 2009 Is that really crocheted? You bet it is. Meet Todd Paschall, the brains behind Crochet By Numbers, a crocheted portrait technique. recalls. "They looked good, but didn’t baave the shading down.” Paschal tweaked snd tested his program and ultimately, his perseverance resulted in his exchusve péttern-wrting program and erochet technique: Crochet By Numbers Crochet By Numbers patterns don't include graphs as one might expect. They are line-by-line instructions made a Todd Paschall original, entirely of numbers that tell the veader how many etitehes to stiteh, in which color, and when to switch to the next color, Lookingat one of these patterns without understanding how ta ead itean bea little dizzying. But onee learned, it's in fact pretty simple—fun, too. And of course the results are stunning. Paschall is perhaps best known for his crocheted portraits of cultural ions. Most recently, a portrait he stitched of Barack Obama created quite stir. attracting the attention of hundreds of stitchers online towhom he's given the pattern for free. Paschall’s also found success creating cus pene Oprab er eet coe tom portraits for individual clients and businesses such as coffee shops. “A lot of people don’t know it can be done and are fagcinated by it when they see it.” he says. can usually come up witha pricing structure that will fit into most budgets.” ‘Three years ago, interest in Paschall's work led him to stat teaching at asenior citizens’ center near his home in Atlanta, Georgia. “Tve gotten a huge response,” he says. "Alot ofthe seniors already know hhow to erochet, but I nun their photos through my software, then help them understand the numbers. They pick it up really quickly—one of my students is 93 and she's got it down.” Today, Paschall i lucky to crochet full- time, In addition to stitching portraits and teaching, he's training others to teach his technique atart and fashion schools. He also produces personal patterns for visi- tors to his website, which has turned out tobe one of the best things about his job. “People tell me the most amazing sto ries about their loved ones~a sister who died of leukemia, weddings, first-born babies,” says Paschall. “When someone erochets from a pattern I create for hem, they end up with a one-of-a-kind pieee, something that will last forever. That is the most rewarding thing about all ofthis forme.” Leara more about Crochet By Numbers atervehetbynumbers.com. it crochet doctor write to us! Got a erochet question? Ifyou ‘want to make a motif with am open center (like a granny square), start with 2 chain ring length of chain stitches connected with a slip stitch, An adjustable ring, also referred tows a magic ring isn't magic at all-its simply an-unseeured Toop. You ean start witha faslylarge ring, which ‘ill make if easy to navigate your hook through the ‘ings youwork your first round of stitches. ‘Simply Toop the yarn into a ring and hold it with ‘your left hand (fig. a). Work your first round of stitches into the ing (fy. b).‘Then, when you are finished with the first round, simply pull the yarn ‘end taut to completely close the eemter hole. On the other hand, the chain ring is a fixed size loop. This means that i'you make the chai: ‘ring with the same number of chains for each ‘oli dhe willall have the same size center hole egginners may find the chain ring easier Gig: ‘to work with since the size of the sing will not change ifyou pull on the yarn end. pe Let's check to see ifyou're inserting your hook in the correct spot When you look at each stiteh, you'll notice there isa post (the vertical “leg” of the stitch; fig. d), anda "V" shape on the top of each stiteh (ig. e) ‘Traditionally, you should insert your hook under both loops of the "V" of each stiteh to form the next stitch. Itsounds like you may be inserting your hook in the space between each stitch instead (fig. which can cause the work 10 expand 60 that it looks more like mesh, Always he sure to insert your hook. underthe “V” unless the pattern indicates otherwise. 18 crochet today + march / april 2000 $s it better to pull the yarn from the inside or outside of the skein? hz tite ob many things ithe sre ative world, whether you pull your yarn from the inside or outside of a skein or hull i 2 matter of personal preference. ‘The benefit to starting your work with the center yarn end is that your ‘kein of yarn will tay in one place as you work, and the yarn will easily travel up toyour hands as you stiteh. On the other hand, when working with an outer ‘end, you'll ypically have to tug on your ‘yarn to “unwrap” it from the skein as ‘you go. and the skein will tend to roll around asyou do so. ‘One exception is ervchet thread, || which is typically wound around a card Doan epool and has no center endbut, the apool helps the thread stays nies and ‘ndy as you work, so go right ahead and starcwith the outside end. ea aa, Sees SS a ‘march / april 2009 » crochet today. 19 When the weather calls for a light extra layer, this darling cardi lacy cropped cardi is exactly what you need.
