Unit 4 – Requirements Engineering

Purpose of this Unit

Provide a basic understanding of how technical requirements define a commercial
airplane system and their significance to a successful product development program.
Learning Objectives
•Understand the different classification and types of requirements, and how they
cascade or flow down to define lower level requirements.
•Define the attributes of a good requirements statement.
•Understand the role and importance of Systems Engineering in the Requirements
Engineering process.
•Differentiate requirements from standards and specifications.

Summary
Requirements
•Are classified in four main categories and represent product criteria and parameters
that define customer and internal business needs.
•Top level requirements are cascaded down through the systems and product hierarchy.
•Clear and concise requirements statements are essential to create common
understanding and technical compliance.

Requirements Engineering
•Effectively done creates clear and executable inputs for effective design that are key to
meeting schedule and budget constraints.
•Effectively done creates stability, collaboration and synergy between key stakeholders
