ARCHITECTURAL JOURNALISM THE VOYAGE OF APURVA BOSE DUTTA Architectural Journalism is means for us to appreciate art and architecture. It enables us to admire and explore architecture and also express ourselves. When we write about a building, there is a lot we learn about the building it gives us the opportunity to learn and explore. Italso creates a platform for us to aware and educate to the masses. Ar. Apurva Bose isone of the first Architectural journalist in India. She graduated in 2005, at a time where architectural journalism was not a profound profession. She didn’thave many mentors to guide her thought this journey. At that time A+D was the top most architectural magazine in India, she got placed there and started off her career. For the many aspiring architectural journalists, she advises that we first start working with a hardcore publication before we start freelancing, This would give us more exposure and also, we would understand the system better. As architectural journalists we must explore as much as we can, create more avenues or methods for us to express like the print media, social media, workshopsete. To be an architectural journalist, means to have a strong grip on expressing through words. For this, Ar. Apurva advices us to learn writing by taking writing classes, or journalism course, attending workshops and any other possible means. This will enable us to understand the different styles of writing. She emphasises on this as it would help usin shaping our thoughts. Many colleges have already started including architectural journalism in their curriculum. She insists that architectural journalism must be introduced in colleges as a fulltime subject throughout the duration of the courseas it wouldopen more avenues for the aspiring students. When it comes to the pay in this field, Ar. Apurva says it might not belucrative as one would start off, but gradually once we learn and gain experience, one would surely earn what they deserve. She also suggests that this field needs alot of younger minds, especially students of architecture as ithas a lot more scope in the current times. Many people are taking up this as their fulltime profession. There a lot we can explore andlearn. Architecture, as we know, is the mother of all arts. It has so many branches art, design, buildings, construction, planning and so on. In the same sense, architectural journalism also has many subjects one could write about, it could be about buildings, new technologies, academic, future of architecture and so on. Ar. Apurvainsists that this field is in the dire need of young minds who need to write seriously and originally. She points out that architectural journalism is not about criticizing other architects and their works but writing constructively, it’s about making an effort in understanding the architect’s take on the project. In the end she says that inspiration, that’s utmost important for writing, comes not just from one person, but from architecture itself. We must find our inspiration and motivation from anywhere and everywhere possible to become architectural journalists that take this seriously and respect this field & the people in it.
