To whom it may concern:

Athina has a heart of gold. She has created her family and looks out for them. She puts them
first and makes sure they are all taken care of. Every day for school she had to travel from
Tijuana to San Diego. She had to wake up very early and the time to and from school took
hours. I asked her if I could pick her up at the border to cut her time down substantially. She
turned down the offer because my car wasn’t big enough for the other people in her family
who also needed to cross.

In the time I’ve been with her I’ve admired her ability to create. She’s easy to be around and
easy to love. She’s charming and has great ideas to bring to the table. She has a natural ability
for words and putting them together in rhyme. To me, Athina seems to have different options
and visions for the future, but is flexible and able to be here now. Her past hardships do not
define her, they refined her into the upstanding woman she is now.

Athina has many layers and aspects that I know I haven’t even seen, and I’m lucky that I get to
be her mentor. She’s taught me so much about life and given me true perspective on what
matters.
