A Technical Note on
UV inhibition of GRP piping — Details
One of the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's) is that GRP piping being supplied
can withstand UV effects from the environment. If the manufacturer is providing
suitable protections, what are they and how they were employed or introduced.
Customer /Contraetor and Client wants to understand how this is carried out. In this,
regard, please find below the responses.
Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) is an amalgamation of resin, glass fibers,
additives and fillers as needed which results in long term performing laminates.
This FRP is being called also as FRP / GRP/RTRP and RPMP.
FRP_ is being produced by various process. Amiantit FIBERGLASS Industries
Limited (AFIL) produces pipes by continuous filament winding processes in which
the pipe laminate is produced continuous filament winding machines,
FRP Pipe wall consists of
mainly three layers viz
Structure of the Pipe
exterior of the pipe, structure
of the pipe and interior of the Interior of the pipe Wall
pipe. It is required that all the above ground piping system need to be UV
protected. This can be achieved by various methods. AFIL considers this
requirements and ensures to protect all above ground or exposed piping system to
be UV inhibited. This is being done irrespective of the customer requirements.

This UV inhibition is carried out by mixing the TiO2 in the resin from the
beginning of the pipe production and will continue till the pipe wall is completely
produced.
The chemical nature of UV inhibitor (TiO2) is so that addition of the UV inhibitor
does not change the color of the resin and hence cannot be differentiated in color.
In this regard we do confirm that this UV inhibitor is being provided for all the
Above ground / exposed piping system and this can be verified and confirmed
ing, Apart from this verification, no means are available
to re confirm and verify the addition.
Above clarifications will enable customer / contractors / consultants to understand
the procedure involved in UY inhibition of GRP piping.
