Why Write a Business Plan for your Proposed Project?


A business plan is an important tool for any entrepreneur to judge the effectiveness and efficiency
of what S/he wants to do or have been doing. Your business plan can also be a useful tool to help
you raise capital for your business venture (which Udd Consulting believes is the reason you are
engaging us). Lenders, Venture Capitalists, Seed Capital Funders, Development and Investment
Banks and Money Deposit Banks (MDBs) like to lend money to groups or businesses they think
will be able to make it and also pay back the loan. Your job as the initiator of the business idea and
Entrepreneur is to convince them that your business is going to be successful. A good Business
Plan provides an operating platform and avenue to assist you in running the business and improves
your probability of success. It communicates your idea to others, serves as a “selling tool,” and
provides the basis for your financing proposal. If you do not want to use the Business Plan to raise
money for the project or business, your plan will be internal and may be less formal. If you are
presenting it to outsiders as a financing proposal, presentation quality and thorough financial

Ways to Ruin Your Business Plan

Udd Consulting is only consulting and guiding you as an entrepreneur and do not act as your
solicitor, representative or agent. Highlighting some common errors in business plan preparation

and presentation that may undermine the credibility of the plan and hurt your chances to receive
funding for your enterprise is part of our obligation.

1. Submitting a “rough copy,” (with food stains, dirt and turn pages). This tells the reader that
your management does not take the planning process seriously.

2. Outdated historical financial information or unrealistic industry comparisons will leave


doubts about the entrepreneur’s planning abilities. Business owners are fond of using templates
or old business plans, not minding the current market trends and competition in the factor
market. Sponsors rely so much on banks and financial information are updated every second
businesses (because market forces are dynamic) in various they may wish to recommend for
sponsorship. Current and up to date information on a business is one of the triggers for
sponsorship and funding.

3. Unsubstantiated assumptions can hurt a business plan; the business owner must be prepared to
explain the “why” of every point in the plan to convince the prospective investor or sponsor, as
some of them may not be professional enough to ascertain the success claim of your project.

4. Too much “blue sky” - a failure to consider prospective pitfalls - will lead the reader to
conclude that the idea is not realistic.

5. A lack of understanding of financial information. Even if someone else prepares the


projections, the owner must be able to explain them in simple way that every reader or listener
can appreciate.

6. Lack of specific, detailed strategies. A plan that includes only general statements of strategy
(“We will provide world class service and the lowest possible price.”) without important details
on how you will achieve this, will be dismissed as fluff. Especially if the business plan is
prepared for a lender:

7. Lack of Equity Contribution. No indication that the owner has anything at stake. The lender
expects the entrepreneur or the project promoter to have some equity capital invested in the
business before the willingness to sponsor is ascertained. Your knowledge, experience,
management skills, qualification, ownership of land or ability to rent one at least is your
contribution and should be captured in the Plan in terms of Naira and Kobo to show your
sponsor that you are not just a free for all taker. Money is difficult to gather, talk less of saving.
It is fragile, it is liquid and it is volatile! Nobody will like to play with his or her hard earned
money!

8. Unwillingness to personally guarantee any loans. If the business owner is not willing to stand
behind his or her project, then why should the bank or the venture sponsor? Understanding what
a loan is, will guide the Entrepreneur appropriately.

9. Starting the plan with unrealistic loan amounts or terms. Do your homework and propose a
realistic structure.

10. Too much focus on collateral. Even for a cash-secured loan, the banker is looking toward
projected profits for repayment of the loan. Cash flow should be emphasized as the source of
repayment. This is a thorough analysis of the project cash flow to show the steps, periods and
other methods with which you, the lender will pay back the money with the accruing interest.
This is the area the investor is very emphatic and critical, because, the investor believes S/he
should reap more that S/he sown.

11. SWOT Analysis. There is no business or project that does not have challenges, be it a start-up
or an existing enterprise. The financier of the project, no matter how close S/he may be to you –
the promoter, will require that you tell him or her how you will/can avert impending dangers.
Example: Bird flu in Poultry Production or water scarcity in the dry season on Catfish and
vegetable production or payment of teacher’s salaries during the first three years in Nursery and
Primary School Business, just to mention a few. A detailed knowledge on the Strengths,
Weaknesses, Opportunity and Threats – alias SWOT will convince the sponsor that you know
what you are doing, why you are doing, where you are going and for whom you are doing. If
you answer these questions objectively, you are on line to getting what you want, except
otherwise.
