FOREWORD
PETRONAS Technical Standards (PTS) has been developed based on the accumulated knowledge,
experience and best practices of the PETRONAS group supplemented by national and international
standards where appropriate. The key objective of PTS is to ensure standard technical practice across
the PETRONAS group.
Compliance to PTS is compulsory for PETRONAS‐operated facilities and Joint Ventures (JVs) where
PETRONAS has more than fifty percent (50%) shareholding and/or operational control, and includes
all phases of work activities.
Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers who use PTS are solely responsible in ensuring the quality of
work, goods and services meet the required design and engineering standards. In the case where
specific requirements are not covered in the PTS, it is the responsibility of the
Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers to propose other proven or internationally established
standards or practices of the same level of quality and integrity as reflected in the PTS.
In issuing and making the PTS available, PETRONAS is not making any warranty on the accuracy or
completeness of the information contained in PTS. The Contractors/manufacturers/suppliers shall
ensure accuracy and completeness of the PTS used for the intended design and engineering
requirement and shall inform the Owner for any conflicting requirement with other international
codes and technical standards before start of any work.
PETRONAS is the sole copyright holder of PTS. No part of this document may be reproduced, stored
in a retrieval system or transmitted in any form or by any means (electronic, mechanical, recording or
otherwise) or be disclosed by users to any company or person whomsoever, without the prior written
consent of PETRONAS.
The PTS shall be used exclusively for the authorised purpose. The users shall arrange for PTS to be
kept in safe custody and shall ensure its secrecy is maintained and provide satisfactory information to
PETRONAS that this requirement is met.

The manufacturer shall specify the rated pressures for seat and liner at temperatures
exceeding 50 degrees Celsius.
3.1.3 Wall thickness – body
The wall thickness shall be the result of calculations, which prove the wall thickness to be
sufficient for the appropriate pressure designation and/or to withstand pressure testing in
accordance with BS EN 12266 ‐ 1. Calculations shall be in accordance with ASME VIII division
1 (when applicable see section UG‐101).
3.1.4 The minimum valve bore shall be as follows:

200 198.0 144.0
3.2 BODY
3.2.1 The valve body shall be designed to withstand loads, induced by the connected piping, without
distortion of internals affecting the free movement of the ball and sealing performance. The
manufacturer shall inform the Principal of any limitations.
3.2.2 Drilling of, or pinning to, the wall of a pressure containing part, e.g. for name plate fixing, is
not permissible where such drilling or pinning would reduce the effective thickness below the
minimum permitted value.
3.2.3 Body split
‐ The manufacturer shall be able to demonstrate by means of calculations that the design
is such as to prevent undesirable distortion. The design shall be based on the most
unfavourable pressure / temperature rating of the appropriate pressure designation.
Flange calculations shall be in accordance with ASME B16.34 and ASME VIII, division 1,
appendix 2.
‐ The body split shall be outside the plane of the stem protrusion, unless the manufacturer
/ supplier supplies proof of approval by PETRONAS for symmetrical body splits.
3.2.4 End flanges of nodular cast iron valves shall be cast integral with the valve body or body
connector.
3.2.5 Face to face dimensions shall include the lining thickness (both flange faces) when in the
installed condition.

3.2.6 The face‐to‐face tolerance shall be 1.6 mm.
3.2.7 Flange misalignment
The following tolerances shall apply:
Lateral alignment (offset of the aligned flange centrelines):
‐ For valves ≤ DN 50 (≤ NPS 2): maximum misalignment = 1.5 mm (0.059 inch),
‐ For valves > DN 50 (> NPS 2): maximum misalignment = 2 mm (0.079 inch).
Parallelism of the aligned flange faces (angular alignment):
For valves with flanges DN < 650 (NPS 26”) to ASME B16.5 the maximum misalignment = 2.5
mm/m (0.03 inch/ft).
3.2.8 The surface finish of the nut bearing area at the back face of flanged valves shall be parallel to
the flange face within 1°.
3.2.9 End flange dimensions shall be in accordance with one of the following standards:
Carbon steel ‐ ASME B16.5
Nodular cast iron ‐ ASME B16.42
3.2.10 Provisions for mounting an extended stem or an actuator/gear box shall be incorporated in
the design for valves DN 50 and larger.
3.3 LINING AND SEATS
3.3.1 A body liner shall be extended over the body end and body connector flange facings. The
design shall ensure complete and proper sealing for both raised and flat face connecting
flanges.
3.3.2 The liner shall be capable of withstanding vacuum down to 10 Pa (0.1 mbar).
3.4 BALL VALVES AND CHECK VALVES (Ball Type)
3.4.1 Balls shall be of the solid type
3.4.2 Ball Valves
The ball shall be of a seat supported design (floating) for valves with a body split.
3.4.2.1 The ball port shall be cylindrical.
3.4.2.2 Ball stem‐slots shall be perpendicular to the ball port.
3.4.2.3 The stem (ball valves)
3.4.2.3.1 The design shall take into account a safety margin and the maximum output torque of the
operating mechanism.
3.4.2.3.2 The weakest point of the stem shall always be outside the valve.
To ensure the smallest cross sectional area of the stem and the connection to the ball
provide adequate strength to operate the valve at the most severe design conditions as per
appropriate class. It shall withstand the maximum side loads and operating torque needed

to seal and to operate against the maximum class differential pressure (applied to one or
both sides of the valve, whichever case needs the highest torque).
3.4.2.3.3 The manufacturer shall be able to demonstrate the adequacy of the stem design by
calculations and proving stem pull tests. These combined stresses shall not exceed the
maximum allowable stresses specified in ASME VIII div. 1.
3.4.2.3.4 The design of valve stem, ball and operating mechanism shall be such that ball and operating
mechanism have only "one" unique position after assembly. Any stem extension or actuator
shall not influence this requirement.
3.5 STEM RETENTION (ANTI BLOW‐OUT) (BALL VALVE)
3.5.1 The anti blow‐out stem/body configuration shall be capable of withstanding the full internal
pressure of the valve as per the appropriate pressure designation.
3.5.2 The stem retainer ring or collar shall be integral with the stem.
3.6 STEM SEALING (BALL VALVE)
3.6.1 Stem sealing arrangements as per the manufacturer’s standard are acceptable.
3.6.2 For stem seals executed with toroidal sealing rings (“O”‐ rings) the groove dimensions and
surface finish shall be in accordance with BS4518.
3.6.3 Secondary stem sealing shall be independent from any sealing performance provided by the
body and stem/ball lining.
3.7 FIRE‐TESTED DESIGN
3.7.1 Valves do not need to have a fire‐tested design.
3.8 OPERATION (BALL VALVES)
3.8.1 The type of operating mechanism may be as per the manufacturer's standard or
recommendation.
3.8.2 Ample space shall be available between valve end flanges and a manual operating mechanism.
3.8.3 Wrenches shall have a fixing bolt and/or nut.
3.8.4 A wrench shall not be longer than 2 times the face‐to‐face length of the valve.
3.8.5 The maximum operating force shall not exceed 360 N.
3.8.6 The position of a wrench or indicator shall be in the direction of the line when the valve is
open and be perpendicular to the line when the valve is closed.
3.8.7 The mounting‐on construction shall be such that any product emission via the stem seal
cannot penetrate into the gearbox housing.
3.8.8 The maintenance manual shall show how the closure member shall be assembled
4.0 MATERIALS
4.1 Bolting and other valve components shall not be galvanised or cadmium plated.
