INTRODUCTION TO BLOCKCHAIN

 A blockchain is a decentralized, distributed, and oftentimes

public, digital ledger that is used to record transactions
across many computers so that any involved record cannot
be altered retroactively, without the alteration of all
subsequent blocks.
 There are a range of different ways blockchain technologies
can be used to generate business benefits, such as improved
visibility and near real-time reporting.
 Some applications are built around the synchronicity of the
ledger and its ability to simplify reconciliation, while others
are focused on removing middleman from systems, reducing
cost and bias.
 A third group, meanwhile, are dedicated to hosting smart
contracts, automating and adding certainty to contractual
arrangements and transactions.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION FOR BLOCK CHAIN IN
SUPPLY CHAIN INDUSTRIES

 When an outbreak of a food-borne disease happens, it can

take days, if not weeks, to find its source.
 Better traceability could help save lives by allowing
companies to act faster and protect the livelihoods of
farmers by only discarding produce from the affected farms.
 Industries thought that blockchain technology might be a
good fit for the decentralized food supply ecosystem.
 To test this hypothesis, the company created a food
traceability system based on Hyperledger Fabric.
Tracking food for better safety

According to Walmart, millions of bags or heads of lettuce had

to be removed, and consumers lost confidence in romaine
lettuce altogether.
Better traceability could help save lives by allowing companies
to act faster and protect the livelihoods of farmers by only
discarding produce from the affected farms.
For this reason, Walmart has always been interested in
enhancing transparency and traceability in the food system.
Choosing the Blockchain
Looking forward

Walmart now traces over 25 products from 5 different

suppliers using IBM Blockchain which is built atop Hyperledger
Fabric.
Walmart plans to roll out the system to more products and
categories in the near future in cooperation with IBM Food
Trust.
Walmart thought of tracing other data, like sustainability in
addition to the tracking of food chain.
