In this brief article Samuel Kwok will try to give you an insight into Wing Chun viewed through the practise of Chi Sau and at the same time erases some misconceptions that have developed over the years. Chi Sau is the heart of Wing Chun, its importance cannot be underestimated. Chi Sau allows a practitioner to investigate technique and use of energy correctly, without the risk of injury. 08 womamagazine ‘00 many people use their Chi Sau to score points by hitting their training partner. Ina juvenile way they fel the need to prove themselves. Quite often the contact made is fr too heavy and is directed into the face. This can lead to Injuries because ofthe lack of contol that is inherent in this method of practice. An aggressive attitude ofthis kind not only goes against the philosophy of Kung Fu it fs also detrimental tothe progress of the student, It prevents them from attaining relaxed, confident and realistic approach to fighting and to everyday life Another sad development isthe isolation this way of thinking has created among Wing Chun schools. Is this true and if so, how did Bruce Lee study so many arts? ruce Lee had a deep and abiding incerestn martial arts. Asayoung man, he loved the tich martial traditions, legends, and folklore of the Chinese matial arts. He was aware of many styles of gung Fu while he was growing up in Hong Kong and inteigued with the many different famous masters and the skills they were supposed to have possessed. Despite the fact that he was training in the Wing Chun system, he nevertheless had a keen interest in being expesed to diferent forms of gung Fu and learning abot them. Ss Me Importance of Mass and Velocity The following examples offered toexplain the scientific principles that thetaekwondo stulent can relate to everyday techniques. KINETIC ENERGY = 1/2MV2 Whore M= MASS. Volocity expressed as ft/sec. Note: Mass Is expressed in ‘SLUGS = Ib /(f./sec.2) To equate mass with weight in is., one ‘must dvido the weight by 32 because ‘32ft/se.2 Is the gravitational force exerted by the earth on a body. Thus, the ‘mass of a man whose weight Is 160Ibs. 16 150/32 = 5 slugs. The force (kinetic energy) of a sidekick that has a weight of 30Ibs and travels, tt. n 4/5 sec. +4 (80/32) x(9/-2)2 = 108.5 Ibs. Power = time rate of doing work, expressed 2s horsepower. One horsepower Was dotermined as the amount of work (load pulled) by @ horse in one minute = 330 Ibs. Itted 100 f. oF 33,000 ft. bs. por ‘minute or 550 ft bs. per sec. Power Is also ‘expressed in watts whore one horsepower {sequal to 746 watts. Therefore, nthe above example, the sldekick’s power fs 105.5 ft. Ibs. n 1/5 sec. or 527.5 ft bs,/se0 or 0.96 horsepower or 716.2 watts By varying the factors, the formula shows ts that doubling the mass while the velocity remains the same DOUBLES the power, bout doubling the velocity while the mass remains thesame QUADRUPLES the power! Obviously itis not necessary tocompute the power ofall techniques in orderto be 2 functional practitioner, but the above ‘exampleshould merely emphasize the importance of mass and velocity [Master Steven Miler demonstrates the power ofthe sidekick by breaking 7 beards. How To Use Mass and Velocity To Develop Technique? Every detail, every motion, and every maneuver must contribute either tothe massorto the velocity ina technique. By knowing which part contributes mass and which partserves the velocity we ean ‘emphasize all detail and focus our efforts to the propersideof the equation eves, the For example: a step-punch: mass isenhanced by 1. Breath control While most techniques have common properties, many have their own intricacies and devices. However, all are totaly reliant ‘on mass and velocity to produce power In conclusion, all compan ofall techniques must fll on one side cor the other of the formula for kinetic ‘energy, and by knowing to which side cach part contributes, we are able to takeone step closer tothe unattainable perfect” technique. © wwawomaty 39) Article: Bob Jones oy * Photographs: ©Bob Jones — Aikido has evolved froma long history and tradition of Japanese combat. tis acollection of linked practise regimes based on the need for differing outcomes. So where dl they differ and how can we work off each other to improve our individual games? For meas Judoka, like to believe that my kills in Newaza (groundwork) and my skills n Tachiwaza (standing work) are reasonably even in both levels, of skill and application ‘This was noc always the case though, Standing Transition to Groundwork Asa junior transitioning through to senior level of competition my standing was more prominent than my groundwork. | would go as far 3st say 7096 in favorof standing. | preferred to throw more than. transitioning down tothe ground, | then got caught on the ground in the final ofa major competition and was ‘mortified by this that lowed that it ‘would never happen again. | started to train more intensely on the ground and started todevelop strong armlocks and strangles. | also realised at this stage just how Important the transition process was, going from throwing situation tothe ground, and I endeavored! towork really hard on the smooth proces from my standing game down to my mat game, “This was also so important because the rules of Judo were such that if transition was nor smooth or progressive then both fighters were stood up after ‘only a few seconds of groundwork fighting, I would say that this situation hada knock-on effect tothe dleyelopment and training of groundwork in Judo witha coach’ mindset turning tothe question of ‘why coach i we can't use tin competitions”? wwewoma.ty 49 (One ofthe many rule changes that have had a relly positive effect on the balance of Judo development worldwide isa simple but very effective one. Afr long discussions with both top level referees and coaches, was agreed that by giving more time ‘nthe ground for techniques to develop, that it ‘would encourage coaches to train more specifically in groundwork and to teach the skillsin more detail, The really has turned Judo its head and although we are still not quite there yet, certainly the difference of standing to groundwork in competitions and traning has changed positively Itisdefinitely more balanced now. Is goingin the right direction Why Does BIJ Need More Standing Transitions Into Groundwork? Bj) has developed so much in the other direction that they have definitely taken groundwork into another stratosphere. Their groundwork to standing is probably 70% to 30% the other way to that of Judo, So we might ask the question as to why BJ needs toimprove theirstanding work? Ie isa different sport to Judo afterall, and itconcentrates mainly on submission moves on the ground, Hear me out fora moment as Im hoping to feed youalla tiny bit of food for thought. Most ofthe top Jitsu fighters that I have spoken to have stated, thac they deem it very important to improve their standing game. Just throwing one’s body down to the ground and pulling your opponent downwards intoa groundwork situation does not always give the best opportunity for specific moves. You can't ‘necessarily control the reaction you need to start your portfolio of techniques. “Multi World Champion Rodger Gracie is one of these practitioners who realised that he had to adjust his balance of groundwork to standing work So much so, that he works very closely with Judo Clympicsilver medalist Ray Stevens a Judo 7th Dan and BJ} and Dan in order to train and develop his throws and transition. 50 womantagazine ‘Two great Champions working together to improve ‘their games and to address their balance of play. Stay with me here.imagine that they were not able ta just jump inta the guard from a standing position but had to throw progressively into their ‘ground game? “They would have to improve their throwing ability and train forthe transition more specifically into ‘groundwork, as wellas have control ove, to some degree as you will have trained it forthe reactions ‘of your opponent. Just an idea but one that might parka different training direction, Why improve their throwing when JuJitsu is more prominently groundwork than standing? Well for one thing both sportsstart from a standing position and both go tothe ground. Weall know how important the start is forall ames. I've always said, "They who control the grips, controls the fight” Be in control ofthe situation, know your gameplan, be first always, One thing that is very important though, is that both sports can learn from each other and will prosper because of it. @sisu SISU MAX | NEXTGEN MORE PROTECTION.
