Introduction to Scholarship
Scholarships
There are very many kinds of scholarships. Some scholarships will cover all the
tuition fees (money that the student needs to pay to study), others may just
help towards the tuition fees. Some scholarships may include money for other
things such as food and accommodation.
Scholarships may have a financial need component but rely on other criteria as
well.
3
Athletic Scholarships are generally based on athletic performance of a
student and used as a tool to recruit high-performing athletes for their
school's athletic teams.
Merit Scholarships can be based on a number of criteria, including
performance in a particular school subject or even club participation or
community service.
Types of Scholarship
4
the most common awards in this category. For example, the Gates
Millennium Scholars program is a minority scholarship funded by Bill and
Melinda Gates for excellent African American, American Indian, Asian
Pacific Islander American and Latino students who enrol in college.
Career-specific: These are scholarships a college or university awards
to students who plan to pursue a specific field of study. Often, the most
generous awards to students who pursue careers in high-need areas
such as education or nursing. Many schools in the United States give
future nurses full scholarships to enter the field, especially if the student
intends to work in a high-need community.
College-specific: College-specific scholarships are offered by
individual colleges and universities to highly qualified applicants. These
scholarships are given on the basis of academic and personal
achievement. Some scholarships have a "bond" requirement. Recipients
may be required to work for a particular employer for a specified period
of time or to work in rural or remote areas; otherwise, they may be
required to repay the value of the support they received from the
scholarship. This is particularly the case with education and nursing
scholarships for people prepared to work in rural and remote areas. The
programs offered by the uniformed services of the United States (Army,
Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration commissioned corps, and Public Health
Service Commissioned Corps) sometimes resemble such scholarships.
Athletic: Awarded to students with exceptional skill in a sport. Often
this is so that the student will be available to attend the school or
college and play the sport on their team, although in some countries
5
government funded sports scholarships are available, allowing
scholarship holders to train for international representation.
Brand Scholarships: These scholarships are sponsored by a brand
that is trying to gain attention to their brand, or a cause. Sometimes
these scholarships are referred to as branded scholarships. The Miss
America beauty pageant is the most famous example of a brand
scholarship.
Creative Contest Scholarships: These scholarships are awarded to
students based on a creative submission. Contest scholarships are also
called mini project based scholarships where students can submit
entries based on unique and innovative ideas.
Typically, these are less competitive as the eligible population is smaller and
they include:
6
Labour/trade unions: Major unions often offer scholarships for
members and their dependent children.
Houses of worship: The local house of worship may or may not have
any scholarships for their members, but the religious organization or
headquarters may have some available.
Chamber of commerce: Many chambers of commerce offer (usually
small) grants to students in the community, especially those planning on
careers in business and public service. Even if they do not offer any
themselves, one can usually get a listing of members, and many of them
may offer small scholarships to local students.
Other volunteer organizations: Many organizations offer
scholarships or award grants to students whose background or chosen
field overlaps the field of the organization. For example, local chapters
of professional societies may help the studies of exceptionally
distinguished students of the region. Similarly, charity organizations may
offer help, especially if the late parent of the student was a member of
the organization.
School: Some well-known schools are often endowed with scholarship
funds.
University: Also, some well-established universities may have funds to
finance the studies of extremely talented students of little means.
Eligibility often requires that a student belong to some special category
or be among a nation's best. However, universities provide information
on scholarships and grants, possibly even internship opportunities.
Disabilities: Students with disabilities may be able to apply for awards
intended for people with disabilities. These scholarships may be
7
intended for disabled students in general, or in relation to a specific
disability.
Forms of Scholarship

Why Apply for Scholarship?
Everyone knows that applying for scholarships is important. But “important”
isn’t the right way to describe them. Scholarships are free money you can use
to finance your college degree. Sure, you have to apply for them, which takes
time and effort, but consider this: if you spend 2 hours working on an
application for a $2,000 scholarship and win it – your investment translates to
$1,000 an hour.
Benefits of Scholarships
Scholarships are beneficial not just for the financial gains they provide but also
for the prestige and time they can give to the recipient. By earning a
scholarship, an individual can set himself apart from others in their class. Some
scholarships come with additional benefits of memberships in societies, annual
meetings with professionals that can prove useful for networking or internship
opportunities, and even mentoring groups that can help improve the
9
recipient's overall academic experience. There are very few risks involved in
applying for scholarships especially since they can be declined.
The obvious reason to apply for a scholarship is because you are working
towards an amazing opportunity that will eventually pay off remarkable
dividends in the future. Although applying for scholarships takes time and
energy, they are usually very rewarding in the long run because of the many
perks that they offer. Think of it as an investment in your future.
Scholarships give you money to take care of school fees, books and supplies,
and sometimes living expenses. Unlike loans, you do not have to pay back
scholarships after you graduate. Some scholarships are renewable, which
means that although you go through the application process once, you can
continue to receive funding in the original amount for a certain number of
years or semesters as long as you meet their criteria.
3. Academic Benefits
10
experience outside the classroom through internships, fellowships or travel
abroad. The Fulbright Scholar Program (an American scholarship program of
competitive, merit-based grants for international educational exchange for
students, scholars, teachers, professionals, scientists and artists, founded by
United States Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946), for example, affords
students the opportunity to study and conduct research in one of
approximately 155 countries. Earning one or more scholarships can also raise
your visibility and make you more attractive to admissions committees if you
plan to continue your education at the graduate level.
Applying for scholarships might be challenging in the beginning but they can
help you get to know your professors better. Professors often look favourably
on students who take charge of their futures and proactively work to improve
them. You can ask your professors for help with the essay portion of your
scholarships, and with recommendation letters. By applying for scholarships,
you also become more familiar with resources on campus tailored to your
needs such as a writing centre or computer lab, your library, or the financial
aid office. Lastly, scholarships help you improve your research and writing
skills.
4. Professional Benefits
11
If you're preparing to enter the workforce, listing one or more scholarship
awards on your resume can make you more appealing to prospective
employers. This is particularly true if the scholarship allowed you to develop
certain skills or increase your work experience by completing an internship
with a specific company. During hiring, companies that offer internship
programs typically give priority consideration to previous interns, with some
making direct job offers after the internship ends. Earning a scholarship from a
particular company does not necessarily guarantee that you'll receive a job
offer, but it can increase your chances of securing employment in that industry
or field.
Applying for scholarships also gives you a good opportunity to practice selling
yourself. Contrary to popular opinion, not all scholarships are need-based.
Some scholarships are offered on the basis of talent, unique features, writing
or academic ability, and even personal or quirky characteristics you have.
People who apply for scholarships often hone their marketing skills because
they work hard at writing an essay (if required), seeking the right
recommenders, and going through an interview processes (if required). All of
that makes you look good to a potential employer.
5. Financial Benefits
With the cost of a college education on the rise, it's become more vital than
ever for students to seek out scholarship funding, no matter how small the
amount. Federal and private student loans can help to close the gap for
students without scholarships, but you can easily find yourself in a pile of debt
after graduation. The problem is compounded if you borrow more than you
need for basic living expenses. According to a May 2012 Bloomberg report,
12
student loan debt increased to $904 billion in the first quarter, surpassing all
other forms of debt, including credit cards.
We would therefore discuss ten (10) reasons why you should consider applying
for a scholarship.
The cost of tuition and housing is expensive and your financial resources
are likely to be limited.
You have studied many long hours to get great grades. Let your good
great make ways for you. Let it sell you!
Scholarships are investments in assisting you to pay for your educational
expenses.
Not all scholarships are based on need, some are based on academic or
personal achievements.
Scholarships are a great way to pay for school - it is funding that you
don't have to pay back!
You are unique in all that you do and it is about time that you tell
someone else about it, why not in a scholarship application personal
essay?
Asking for letters of recommendation gives you a chance to connect with
your professors thereby boosting your network
13
There are many scholarships that were established for students with
your interests and talents. Therefore, embrace the opportunity to get
better.
Writing an essay about yourself may not be an easy task, but it is a good
practice for the sake of writing cover letters, resumes and personal
statements.
The number one reason to apply for a scholarship is that you might get
one. Who knows?
As earlier stated, there are plenty of variety in the types of awards that are
offered. Some are merit, athletic or major-based, while others are geared
towards students with specific hobbies, artistic and musical abilities. There are
even a few scholarships out there for students who don't do anything at all.
As you can see, there are plenty of ways to qualify for a scholarship. Chances
are, there are several scholarships for students with your specific interests and
goals. With that, it is easy to qualify for a scholarship. However, it can be very
difficult to win a scholarship.
All scholarship sponsors receive more qualified applications than they have
awards available. The most competitive scholarships have a selection ratio of 1
in 400. The least competitive awards have a selection ratio of 1 in 10.
14
According to the National Postsecondary Student Aid Study, 7% of
undergraduate students receive private sector scholarships, and the average
amount received is about $2,000. That means that your raw odds of winning a
scholarship are 1 in 15.
You can help your odds of winning by applying for less competitive
scholarships, such as local awards. For example, college juniors and seniors
have a better chance of winning a scholarship, since fewer upperclassmen
apply for scholarships. But don't neglect the more competitive national
scholarships, since these also tend to be more lucrative.
One other important thing you should know about scholarships is that they are
not given out just to anyone who asks, requests, or begs for it. They are not
given just because you are poor and disadvantaged. They are not given just
because you are from a developing country or just because you belong to a
minority group. The truth is scholarships are not given out, they are earned.
You earn it by demonstrating your potential and establishing your
qualifications.
Although it is true that your disadvantaged situation initially qualifies you for a
scholarship (that’s why there are minority scholarships, scholarships based on
15
financial need, developing country scholarships), you will still have to satisfy
other qualifications set by the scholarship provider.
But scholarship sponsors aren't going to give you money simply for breathing.
They want to give money to the most talented qualified applicant. So to
maximize your chances of winning the award, you need to identify the criteria
they will use to select the winner. Sometimes the sponsor has published the
criteria they use. Sometimes you have to critique your application from the
sponsor's perspective.
It's important to know when to apply to a scholarship and when not to, and
your qualifications play a large role in determining your course of action. If you
do not meet all of the qualifications, it's a wasted of your time to apply. The
scholarship selection committee may not even look at your application. Spend
time applying for scholarships that you absolutely qualify for so as to increase
your chances of actually winning a scholarship.
16
Let’s look at a general overview of typical scholarship qualifications required by
scholarship providers.
17
Competition Scholarships: you must win the competition (i.e.
essay competition)
Knowing these criteria, you can find ways to gain advantage over your
competitors. For example, if you don’t have very good academic grades, the
personal motivation letter is your chance to show how you deserve to get the
scholarship. In another example, you can do a little extra research about the
18
current areas of focus of the scholarship provider because sometimes students
are chosen based on their chosen field of study or research – if it aligns with
the scholarship provider’s core mission/themes. It is also useful to know the
profiles of previous scholarship recipients; it will give you an idea of the kind of
student that the scholarship providers are looking for.
Conclusively,
19
Scholarship Hacks
Scholarship can seem to be demanding such that you will need to put in so
much for something that is not guaranteed that it is yours. But the question
now is, “would you rather spend hours applying for scholarships or years
paying off student loan debt?”
20
Search local media websites, like television and radio stations
Check community portals
Use geographical Internet searches, like “scholarships in Texas”
Ask people who graduated
Many students look for scholarships that offer the biggest bucks—but those
are also the most competitive. Scholarships with smaller awards usually have
fewer applicants, so your chances of winning may be higher. These
scholarships can help with college costs like books, supplies, and living
expenses. Paying off those smaller expenses can quickly add up to big savings.
Get personal
Instead of burning yourself out applying for every scholarship you qualify for,
have some fun! Apply for scholarships that fit your interests and that you’ll
enjoy. There are scholarships for everyone under the sun (as weird as it
seems): zombie lovers, vegetarians, Magic: The Gathering players … the list
goes on and on (just consider your area of interest). The more personal the
21
scholarship, the more likely your passion will show through, resulting in a
better submission.
If you’re debating on when to start applying, the time is now. You can apply for
scholarships you fit in for (either by interest or by qualification) as early as
you’d like and the rule of thumb is always the earlier, the better.
The process can often be very slow, so be patient and continue applying to
new scholarships while waiting to hear back from those you’ve already applied
to.
Don’t limit yourself to one type of scholarship. Balance it out, applying for any
merit, athletic, and artistic scholarships you qualify for and those that match
your interest.
It’s common sense that the more scholarships you actively seek to win, the
better your odds are of winning. Cast a wide net – applying for as many
scholarships as you’re matched to will make all the difference in winning one.
Some students only apply for scholarships with significantly large award
amounts. The problem with that methodology is that you are going to have a
lot more competition than with lower scholarship amounts.
22
Whatever you can do to decrease your competition will be in your favour, so
applying for all award amounts is a good way to ensure that you have a better
chance of winning.
Remember, there is no limit to how many scholarships you can apply for or
win, so winning several smaller awards can really add up and serve the same
purpose – paying for school – as one large award.
Many students avoid scholarships that require essays and, for those that are
strong writers, focusing on those opportunities can be a smart decision. Yes,
they do take more effort but once you have several essay applications under
your belt, the process gets easier.
Why discard an essay after putting in hard work, time and effort? Many essays
can be re-purposed (once edited) and applied to future applications and can
save you time in the end.
However, don’t just resubmit the same essay – make sure to edit it for each
new scholarship essay question!
It’s cliché and may even get you disqualified. Many scholarship committees
conduct blind readings, and essays that include names or other identifiers are
immediately discarded. Get to the point as quickly as possible.
23
Don’t repeat the essay prompt
Your essay should be about you. The best essays are unique and stand out
from the competition, so be original and use your own words.
You can write the best essay in the world, but if the prompt asks for a list of
five things, and you only list four, you may be disqualified. Make sure you
answer every question and accurately meet every requirement.
Get as close to the word limit as you can, but don’t go over. Exceeding the
word limit may disqualify you.
Proofread
Spelling and grammar mistakes may get you disqualified. Make sure to
proofread your essay at least twice and ask your parents and friends to look it
over, too. The more eyes, the better.
24
Stay organized, keeping deadlines in mind!
Don’t wait until the due date, just in case there’s a problem with the site, the
Internet connection, or your computer.
Always aim to complete your applications before the deadline so that you have
plenty of extra time to fix your application should any issues occur. Application
deadlines aren’t suggestions – they are final. Keep a calendar that outlines
your application deadlines.
Never wait until the deadline to submit your application – apply as early as
possible.
Set aside a specific time that you’re going to focus on applying for scholarships.
It can be one night a week, an hour each day or whatever works with your
schedule.
When the designated time rolls around, focus your efforts solely on your
scholarship applications to ensure that you follow through with the process.
Also, give the person writing the letter significant time and a copy of your
student resume so that they can easily reference your student activities.
25
Don’t become discouraged if you don’t win right away.
Familiarize yourself with the warning signs for scholarship and financial aid
scams. They’re easier than you think to spot!
• Fees: True scholarships are there to aid you, not the other way round. So,
never pay to apply for scholarships or financial aid.
• You’re already a winner! You didn’t apply, yet you’ve won. Legitimate
scholarship offers are those you need to put effort into winning through the
application process – you aren’t just awarded money for no reason.
26
social security number. If you’re ever uncomfortable with the type of
information requested, it’s likely not a legitimate offer.
There are several additional reputable online resources that list scholarship
scam guidelines and information. Utilize them to familiarize yourself with the
warning signs so that you don’t fall prey to student scams.
Interviews
Some scholarships don’t end in the essays; many scholarships go a step further
to invite applicant for interviews. Many of the large, more specific and
prestigious scholarships will require an interview before any awards are given
in addition to a detailed application.
the scholarship board will want a chance to meet with you personally to assess
your character and personality. Application judges want to determine that the
application fits the applicant, and that you are a prime candidate for the
scholarship that is being awarded. These interviews are conducted for
27
academic, merit-based scholarships in which a substantial amount of money
hangs in the balance.
Preparing for these interviews can be stressful and people unused to the
interview process may find it difficult. Therefore, in this chapter we would
consider things necessary before your interview, during and after your
interview. Read on!
Research
You wouldn’t go to an employment interview without doing some background
research on the company. Therefore, you also would not go for a scholarship
interview without doing your research about the scholarship providers.
Some of the things you need to review includes:
Mission statement
Values
Community involvement
Recent news.
Your interviewer (You can utilize LinkedIn to check their professional
profiles)
28
More so, you will want to review your application packet again and your
résumé as well. Bottom line, do prior research work before the interview day.
Practise
Interviews can turn out to be fun and not the “all tensed up situation”, only if
you are well prepared for whatever would happen.
In a bid to get prepared, you are advised to check out possible questions and
then practice answering some of the typical questions you may be asked
during your interview which might include the following enlisted below:
Tell us about yourself.
What is your biggest weakness?
Give an example of a time you overcame adversity.
Where do you see yourself in five or ten years?
What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Why do you think you deserve this scholarship?
What is your biggest academic achievement?
What extracurricular activities do you take part in?
What are some awards that you have won?
What are your professional goals following graduation?
How do you see yourself using your degree?
You can have someone interview you (family or friends). Practice interviews
are a good way to hone your skills before you face the scholarship review
board itself. Have a family member, friend or trusted teacher walk you through
a mock interview, asking the type of questions you will be given during the
actual interview process.
29
Consider having some questions ready for the interviewers. Prepare these
questions in advance from your research work about the company, school or
organization.
Your first impression is very important, and as the saying goes “you don't get a
second chance”. Dress presentably for all of your interviews. While it is not
necessary or compulsory to dress formally, semi-formal attire is appropriate
for all scholarship and college board interviews.
Your dressing should be decided days before the interview day as it should be
a part of your pre-interview plans. Consider the type, colour and nature of your
dresses beforehand.
Men should consider slacks and a dress shirt, or even a suit and tie, and should
be well groomed and professional looking. Female students may want to opt
for a dress or business style suit when attending their interviews. Hair should
be neat and out of your face, and don’t forget to wear shoes that are in good
condition. An interview is not the time to bring out your smelly gym shoes or
beach sandals. You can also consider going along some mints, too. Nothing kills
an interview quicker than bad breath! The important thing here is to appear
professional, able and earnest. Never wear jeans or t-shirts to an interview.
Be Punctual
The first impression you give to scholarship providers also exceeds your
dressing but extends to punctuality. Being late to the interview only shows a
30
lack of respect for the interviewer, and a lack of interest in the scholarship
being offered.
It is preferable to allow plenty of extra time to arrive at your interview, and try
to be a few minutes early. Therefore, before you attend your scholarship
interview, be sure you look up the scholarship provider’s address and
directions online (Check the interview time and location before leaving home).
This will give you an estimate of how long it will take to arrive at your
destination from your location. Give yourself plenty of extra time to deal with
unexpected situations, such as traffic or parking issues, to ensure you do not
arrive late.
You should also note the name of your interviewer or anybody in the
organization whom you can ask after by name when you arrive. Nothing
screams "unprepared" like showing up for a meeting and not remembering
who you are supposed to meet. If you are running behind, please call ahead
and let them know you will be late. This will give the scholarship provider the
option of pushing back your interview or rescheduling it, if necessary. It’s never
good to show up late, but it’s even worse to do so without giving the provider
fair warning.
At your interview
You have arrived your interview early enough. Good enough!
Remember, interviews sometimes are the last factor that determines if you
would get a scholarship or not. Therefore, it will worth it that you putting in
everything required to get that scholarship.
Let’s take a dive into necessary things you would need watch out for during
your interview.
31
Get Conscious of Your Behaviour
Very important, don’t chew gum, bite nails, smoke, yawn, stretch or slouch.
Be Yourself
It can be intimidating trying to impress complete strangers, but here’s
something you should know; you've already impressed them. If they didn't see
something remarkable or unique about you, you wouldn't have been selected
for an interview. Walk into your meeting with confidence, smile, and be
yourself. You've worked hard to get here, so enjoy the moment. It’s not always
32
easy to judge whether or not your interview has gone well. Most interviewers
will keep a stoic face and not give away their true feelings. Don’t let this
influence your responses or behaviour during the meeting. Always conduct
yourself as though you are the best candidate and deserving of the award.
Don't be afraid to ask questions during the interview process. Inquire about
the company sponsoring the scholarship, or ask about particulars regarding the
scholarship itself. Being able to engage the interviewer with questions of your
own shows that you are prepared and comfortable, and highlights your
interest in the award and in your ultimate college career.
Make It a Conversation
Tell your interviewers something that distinguishes you from the other
applicants or something that they cannot find by reading your application. An
example can be that you are be pursuing an engineering degree, but in your
free time you create cartoons just for fun. Perhaps, you have an Instagram
page filled with crazy food concoctions that were created to illustrate
engineering problems, or maybe you are the direct descendant of the person
who invented indoor plumbing. The idea is to find something that sets you
34
apart from the other applicants, whether that’s a talent or a strange
genealogical fact, and let your enthusiasm shine through.
Envision where you want to be in five years, and then figure out how to get
there. Your plan should include how long you will remain in college (bachelor’s,
master’s, or higher?), internships or other outside activities that will help
improve your chances of accomplishing your goals, as well as a financial
strategy to cover all your expenses. Don’t simply say, “I expect to run my own
business and live in New York City.” Take the committee on a journey and fully
explain how the steps you are taking now will place you on the right path to
reach your desired destination.
35
4. “How do you plan to use the scholarship money?”
The reason you would want to know what someone will do with $2,000 if you
to give it to him/her, is the same reason why the scholarship committee is
asking you this question.
Consider assuring the scholarship committee that you working out other ways
of raising funds for yourself. It will impress the committee if they see you are
taking an active role in keeping your student debt to a minimum. Don’t forget
to bring along extra copies of your budget, too, just in case the committee
wants a closer look.
You are advised not to brag about your GPA or how many clubs you belong to
at school. The majority of finalists will all have similar academic
accomplishments, so it’s not worth repeating.
It is also not a good idea to declare that without the scholarship you’ll be
unable to attend college. In most cases, that will be untrue. Yes, you may be
unable to afford your dream college, but I assure you that there are other less
expensive alternatives to earning your degree.
36
Rather, be honest with the committee and acknowledge that there are other
worthy candidates that probably deserve the award as much as you do, but
remind them that your work ethic and past accomplishments are a good
indicator of your future success.
