ant] ~ommm PAV! 0 s. oe MARLOW “| (Hands script to David) Here-- read the Jeff Heming part. Mr. Pike will cue you. DAVID He'll do what, sir? MARLOW He'll cue you. You know what that means. DAVID Of course. You mean, he'll cue me whenever: I have to be cued. MARLOW Yes. Now take it from Jeff Heming's entrance. They are serving tea and Harriet says, "That must be Jeff now." Read! DAVID "Enter laughing." I trust I haven't kept you all waiting too long, but--" MARLOW Read that again, will you? DAVID “Enter laughing." 1 trust--" MARLOW Mr. Colman! There is a parenthesis around “enter laughing." It is a stage direction. DAVID Oh, I'm supposed to laugh when I enter. MARLOW That's right. Exactly! Enter laughing means you laugh when you enter. Proceed. Page DAVID What about. MARLOW I beg your pardon? DAVID What am I laughing about? MARLOW It is in the nature of the character. Jeff Heming is a devil-may-care young man, and he breaks into a solemn gathering of the family for the reading of a will. DAVID Who died? MARLOW His uncle. DAVID And he's laughing? MARLOW He's amused at the false solemnity of the others. They are only interested in the old man's money and-- oh, the hell with it, just let me hear you laugh-- and go on into the speech. (David emits a hollow laugh) No, no. It's an amused laugh. (David gurgles) Amused boy, amused-- (David tries a weak laugh, a hearty laugh, a laugh ending with question) Splendid. Please read. DAVID "I trust I haven't kept you waiting too long, but I know that in your grife, time had no meaning--" MARLOW That's grief, boy. “In your grief, time had no meaning." Page 3 DAVID I'm sorry. "In your grief, time had no meaning.” PIKE “Why are you so late Jeff?" DAVID (weakly) “Heh, heh, heh." MARLOW What was that? DAVID It says chuckles in parenthesis. MARLOW Very good. Continue, Pike. PIKE "You can only blame yourself, Jeff." DAVID (About to read, hesitates) Should I do it the way it says? It says angry. MARLOW Please. DAVID Will you give me one of those cues again? PIKE "You can only blame yourself, Jeff.” DAVID (Whirls at Marlow, shakes his fist and shouts) “That's not true Horace and you know it!" MARLOW Would you mind waiting outside, please?
