Genre & audience: This podcast has to do with murder and comedy. The two hosts
discuss famous murder cases such as Ted Bundy as well as cover social issues such as
discrimination in the justice system. The intended audience for this podcast is
“murderinos” also known as people who like to talk about murder and why it occurs.
Show frequency and history: The podcast released its first episode in January 2016,
making this show just over four years old. They release new episodes every Monday and
Thursday. Monday is minisode day where the authors read hometowns that listeners send
them. These episodes run about thirty minutes long. The Thursday episodes almost
always run for two hours and go over to murder stories as well as fill listeners in on
Host Biographies: The podcast is hosted by both Georgia Hardstark and blah blah.
Georgia is a 39 year old from Irvine, California. She began her career by starting a food
blog, then joined several podcasts eventually co-founding the MFM podcast. She and
Karen both had major success with their shared podcast and later created the Exactly
Right Network, which is a network that supports multiple podcasts. In other words, they
know what they are doing. Karen is a 50 year old writer, comedian, singer, author,
actress, television producer, and podcast host. She started her professional career as a
stand-up comedian and later began writing for many comedy television shows such as
Topics & episodes: Karen and Georgia dive deep into solved murders, cold cases,
kidnappings, and even natural disasters. They release two episodes a week, one averaging
thirty minutes and the other around two hours. The podcast always begins with the intro
song followed by the two hosts discussing current happenings in their lives. They then
tell one story each about different cases that they have researched. This format works
with the audience well by including them in conversation and helping them feel as if the
hosts are their friends. The only weakness that the format could potentially have is if a
listener just wants to listen to the actual stories and not the two hosts talking about life.
Revenue model: The show is produced by the Exactly Right network which the two
hosts founded together. The podcast has multiple sources of revenue. The show relies on
advertising different companies throughout each episode. It also receives money from the
merch that is sold. The hosts also have a fan cult that allows listeners to buy an annual
membership granting them access to extra footage, private merch, and more.
Future outlook: This podcast has been a huge success. There is a huge fan base and a
large number of members to the fan cult. They travel around the world for live shows and
truly have a passion for what they do. For the future, I could see them growing even more
and possibly creating more podcasts about social justice issues. They may face the
challenge of staying on top of the other true crime podcasts such as crime junkie and
morbid.
Closing remarks: Overall this podcast is well put together and has proved to be a
successful hit. The fan base continues to grow despite the podcast being over four years
old which is not surprising due to how much work is put into making the episodes. My
hope is for them to continue to flourish and gain more cult fan members.
