ACTIVITY 1

Take a close look at the following visuals prepared as part of a community


education programme for a group of 15 young literate rural women.

i) Comment on each visual giving your personal opinion about style,


correctness, proportion and size, suitability for learner level.
ii) Next show the visuals to a group of 5 young literate rural women. Carefully
note their comments about each. (Translate the matter in English into your
local language if necessary).
iii) Note your reactions to the response of the group in (ii).
iv) On the basis of suggestions made by the target group, what modifications
(if any) would need to be made in the visuals?

Guidelines :

1) Think &refully and list the characteristics of the target group which would
determine the type of visuals used. Also think about the possible form in
which such visuals would be best displayed to a group of 15 women - flash
cards, flipbooks, flannel graph?
2) List the points you would keep in mind while selecting the sample of five
women for field testing the visuals. What are the key assumptions you will be
making?
3) In (iii) you shoild clearly indicate whether the perceptions of the rural women
you noted in (ii) agreed with your own opinions / assessment in (i).
Differences can be expected. Explain why this is so in your particular
situation.
4) In (iv) list all modifications suggested in as much detail as possible so that the
artist can improve on the visuals.
