Pegasus was an immortal winged horse that sprang from the neck of the beheaded Medusa. Bellerophon tamed Pegasus and rode it into battle against the fire-breathing Chimera. Later, when Bellerophon tried to fly to heaven on Pegasus, Zeus caused Pegasus to buck him off, and Pegasus continued on to Mount Olympus, where it became Zeus's thunderbolt-bearer.
