ABSTRACT

The need for electrical energy has been exponentially increasing for the past few decades. For
many years, fossil fuels such as coal were used to generate electricity which is becoming
obsolete due to its adverse effect on the environment and also due to depletion of these fuels.
With technical advancements, power is generated with the help of renewable sources such as
solar, wind, geothermal etc. Out of these sources, solar energy has immense potential to
supply the demand for energy, but it still requires lot of research and development to tap the
maximum potential out of it.

With the advancement of electronic industry, the requirement of low power supply is
essential as numerous industrial and commercial devices rely on power converters for
regulated and reliable DC power source. Solar energy can be extracted and utilized in a more
efficient manner using these power converters.

The demands of DC-DC converters are increasing exponentially because of their high
efficiency, small size as well as simple architecture. The complexity in modelling of DC –DC
converter mainly depends on its usage and its sophistication as it ranges from simple
analogue design for low cost application to digital and self-adaptive model for better
performance. This report comprises of the model of DC-DC synchronous buck converter
which uses soft switching technique. The model of Buck converter is simulated in MATLAB
and desired response is observed.

In this project, synchronous buck converter based PV energy system for portable
applications, especially low power device applications such as charging mobile phone
batteries are considered the comparative study between the proposed synchronous buck
converter and the conventional buck converter is analysed in terms of efficiency
improvement and switching loss reduction.
