LUBRICATING OIL SYSTEM

1 - Definition
The lube oil system is designed for insuring the following functions:

x To lubricate the shaft line including the accessory gear box

x To provide oil for the Hydraulic system
x To provide oil for the torque converter

The lubricating oil system is a close loop where oil flow is built up from the oil tank located in
the lower part of the accessory base by:

x A shaft driven main pump

x An Alternative Current motor driven auxiliary pump for starting and shutdown
sequences
x A Direct Current motor driven emergency pump for emergency shutdown

Lubricating oil conditioning includes:

x Oil tank warming up to keep acceptable oil viscosity while the unit is at standstill
x Oil flow cooling down to evacuate heat from the bearings
x Oil flow filtering
x Oil Header Pressure regulating at constant pressure
x Oil mist elimination

Bearings feeding and return lines are concentric lines; feeding line is installed in return line.
The lubricating oil flows back in the tank by gravity.
Part of the gas turbine bearing sealing air provided by the compressor returns with the oil in
the oil tank and is evacuated to the atmosphere through the oil mist eliminator.

3 - Additional information
Safety:
For safety instructions, please refer to tab SAFETY PRECAUTION FOR PERSONNEL,
document 198A4717 and Residual risks summary 403A2301.

Lubricating oil heater:

When the heater is heating, starting manually or not, the auxiliary lube oil pump is running
automatically

Auxiliary and emergency pump test:

A test valve associated with a push button valve connected upstream the VPR2-1 regulating
valve allows testing sequence of both pumps while the gas turbine is running. When the test
is completed and the test valve closed, auxiliary pump stops automatically, the emergency
pump needs a stop order at the MCC panel to stop.
The auxiliary and emergency pump test must be demonstrated once a month.

Emergency oil pump – Loss of AC power

The emergency lube oil pump starts automatically only during loss of AC power as the shaft
line runs down. Run down may be resulting of normal or emergency shut down or loss of
turning gear sequence. If loss of AC power remains after complete shaft stop, the emergency
oil pump runs three minutes every fifteen minutes to cool down the bearings until AC power
comes back. Refer to Special sequences.

Oil sampling:
Two valves connected both sides of the filter allow filtered oil and not filtered oil sampling. Oil
characteristics must be checked once every three months.

Oil flowing:
Sight glasses are fitted at filter vent, cooler vent, bearing return lines. They allow the operator
to check oil flowing, especially after manual operation related to those components.

Oil characteristics:
Lubricating oil characteristics must comply with GEK 32568.

Redundant cooler and filter:

Lube oil coolers and lube oil filters are installed in a redundant line. Manual transfer valve
allow transfer from one cooler/filter set to the other one.
Manual transfer to the standby filter and cooler is possible at any time. Maintenance work on
those components is only possible during maintenance period with the gas turbine off.
Manual transfer operation is:
Open the filter bypass valve HV130
Open coolers inlet and outlet valves on the water system
Check that oil is flowing through sight glass at filter vent
Slowly transfer from one line to the other one using manual transfer valve

DESCRIPTION

Close the filter bypass valve HV130

Close the inlet water valve of the non-used cooler. Leave to outlet water valve of the
non-used cooler open to allow thermal expansion.

Gas turbine starts up sequence:

Before starting, at starting order, the gas turbine software proceeds to DC emergency pump
sequence test.
The gas turbine starts with the AC electrically driven auxiliary pump, the oil flows through one
of the two cooler and filter. Pressure at lubricating oil header is maintained at constant value
by the pressure regulating valve and distributed to the bearings of the accessory gearbox,
the gas turbine and the generator. The oil flow returns to the tank by gravity due to return
piping slope.
The auxiliary lube oil pump feeds also the torque converter of the starting means.
The oil mist eliminator creates suction pressure in the oil tank and catches oil droplets at oil
tank vent.
Starting the gas turbine with DC electrically driven emergency pump is not permitted.
At the end of starting sequence, the auxiliary pump stops and lubricating is fully performed by
the shaft driven main pump.

Gas turbine on load:

While the gas turbine is on load, the lubricating oil running philosophy is the same as
explained for starting sequence. The shaft driven main pump provides the oil flow.
AC supplied auxiliary pump will automatically start if low pressure is detected from on line
pressure sensors. Very low pressure detection will start the emergency pump and trip the
unit.
Transfer to the standby filter and cooler is possible at any time. Maintenance work on those
components is only possible during maintenance period with the gas turbine off.

Gas turbine shut down sequence:

Lubricating oil running philosophy remain the same as explained above. At 95% of speed,
the auxiliary pump starts for shaft run down and remain running during cool down sequence.
The barring system starts to keep the shaft line rotating at low speed for at least 24 hours.
Oil tank heater shall start automatically to keep the oil viscosity at appropriate value if
needed due to cool ambient.
The emergency lube oil pump starts automatically only during loss of AC power as the shaft
line runs down. Run down may be resulting of normal or emergency shut down or loss of
turning gear sequence. If loss of AC power remains after complete shaft stop, the emergency
oil pump runs three minutes every fifteen minutes to cool down the bearings until AC power
comes back.
