PROTECTION

1.0 GENERAL
The design information included in this specification is not intended to cover complete details.
This specification describes the requirements for a Welded-Steel Gravity and Suction Firewater
Storage Tank. The objective of installing a firewater storage tank is to assure firewater is available
during a fire scenario.
The design information included in this specification is not intended to cover complete details.
The design of the Firewater Storage Tank shall conform to this specification and the complete
Firewater Storage Tank shall be fully compatible to all components supplied.

2.0 REFERENCES
The referenced codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of quality for
materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these standards and the text of
this Specification, the Specification text shall govern.
The latest revision of the referenced codes and standards shall be used as a minimum guide. In
case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment, materials and processes conforming to one
group of codes and standards.

4.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS


All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full compliance with the
respective health and safety requirements established by the following:
 MARAFIQ Standards
 Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.
 Contractor
Health and Safety Standards and Systems as accepted by MARAFIQ
 Health and Safety Conditions
Refer to NFPA 22.
Backflow preventers shall be used where potable water could be contaminated through siphoning or
back pressure from fire water piping.
In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be employed throughout.

5.0 SUBMITTALS
The Contractor shall submit to MARAFIQ, the following items for review and approval before
commencing the work:
 Compliance Statement
Submit certificates from the manufacturer as evidence that the products meet these
Specifications and the referenced standards and codes.
 Statements of NFPA compliance and UL listing, as applicable.
 Contractor's Material and Test Certificate as described in NFPA 13.
 Product Data
Product data shall include principal dimensions, general construction and material for each
item intended to be furnished and installed.
Manufacturer's catalog data for all isolation valves, check valves and all other accessories
and system components necessary for a complete firewater storage tank.
 Installation Instructions
Submit copies of the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions for all
equipment. Include valve data and servicing instructions.
 Shop Drawings
Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 22, MQ-SP-M-4002 – WELDED STEEL
STORAGE TANKS AND Project Specification. .
Complete field detail, shop fabrication and installation drawings of the firewater tank and
supply piping, including locations of control valves, showing routing of all piping, location of
hangers, supports, pipe restraints and other accessories.
Such plans shall be clear, legible and drawn to scale.

PROTECTION

The drawings shall show arrangement, water supply, equipment and all other details
necessary to establish compliance with this standard.
The plans shall also describe all system components.
The plans shall include an elevation diagram.
Define water service and connection with main supply.
 As-Built Drawings
Clearly indicate valves, alarms and controls locations.
Identify any variation from Contract Drawings.
 Maintenance and Operating Instructions
Submit data conforming to NFPA 22, and 25 for maintenance of the firewater tank.
Equipment manufacturer recommended spare parts and tools list.
 Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
 Test Reports
Accurately record and report the methods of testing, times and dates of the test, witnesses to
the test, and the results of the test.
Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements in NFPA 22.

6.0 QUALITY CONTROL


The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and
propose programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified
quality for approval.
6.1 Regulatory Requirements
Comply with MARAFIQ.
Comply with the Saudi Arabian Standards, where applicable and where updated data are
available.
The firewater tank shall meet, at a minimum, the technical requirements of the local
country governing codes and recommended practices.
6.2 Products Quality
Products shall be free of defects in materials, fabrication, finish and installation.
Any equipment that incurs damage shall not be accepted.
Each item of equipment shall be listed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or approved by
Factory Mutual (FM).
Each major item of equipment shall bear the manufacturer’s name or trademark; serial
number, and UL or FM label.
All equipment shall be constructed using new materials designs and built in accordance
with the best practices of the industry.
6.3 Electrical
All electrical work shall be in accordance with NFPA 70 and NFPA 72.

PROTECTION

7.0 DESIGN CRITERIA


This section shall apply to the design, fabrication, and erection of a Welded-Steel Gravity Tanks and
Suction Tanks.
The design, fabrication and installation of the firewater tank shall follow the requirements of NFPA
22, MQ-SP-M-4002 – WELDED STEEL STORAGE TANKS and Project Specification.
The tank manufacturer shall prepare detailed working drawings and calculations (including seismic,
where required) for the fire water tank, piping, foundations and supports.
The tank shall be designed for a basic wind speed under normal conditions as per NFPA 22.
An OSHA-approved handrail shall be placed around the entire circumference of the roof of all steel
tanks in accordance with OSHA Code of Federal Regulations, Title 29, Part 1926.
The capacity of the firewater tank shall be determined by conditions at each individual site after due
consideration of all factors involved. Project Specification shall define the size of the firewater tanks.
Tank will be located such that is it not subject to fire exposure. Firewater tank and all its accessories
shall be UL listed and/or FM approved. Tank materials shall be welded steel.
Contractor shall furnish stress sheets and all plans required for approval.
To prevent lightning damage to tank, lightning protection shall be installed to conform to NFPA 780.
To prevent corrosion damage to tank, cathodic protection shall be installed as determined by soil
testing.
Backflow preventers shall be used where potable water could be contaminated through siphoning or
back pressure from fire water piping.
The fire protection water supply lines, controlling devices, protective devices, alarm systems,
supervisory devices and related equipment shall be made compatible so that all equipment shall
function together as specified.
The design of the firewater tank shall be complete with all necessary accessories for proper
operation.
Duration of the firewater supply shall meet the requirements of NFPA and Project Specifications.
The firewater tank design and installation shall reflect high quality professional work that properly
accounts for practical maintenance concerns and aesthetic concerns, as well as meeting the design
requirements.
7.1 Filling of Tank
A reliable water source shall be used to refill the tank. The water source shall refill the
tank within 8 hours, in accordance with NFPA 22.
A permanent pipe shall be connected to the water source to refill the tank.

8.0 PRODUCTS
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available, from an
in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-of-Kingdom
must be approved by MARAFIQ. All products, system components and hardware shall be in
compliance with NFPA 22. Only listed materials and devices shall be used in the installation of
automatic wet sprinkler system. Components that do not affect system operation, such as drain
valves and signs, shall not be required to be listed.

PROTECTION

System components installed outside, or in the presence of a corrosive atmosphere, shall be


constructed of materials that will resist corrosion or shall be suitably protected from corrosion.
All products, system components and hardware shall be in compliance with the applicable NFPA
standards and the Project Specifications.
All valves, alarms and any additional fire fighting equipment shall be UL listed and/or FM approved.
8.1 Tank
The tank design, fabraction, and erection shall be the requirements of NFPA 22, MQ-SP-
M-4002 – WELDED STEEL STORAGE TANKS, and Project Specification.
All accessories and trim required by NFPA 22 and MQ-SP-M-4002 – WELDED STEEL
STORAGE TANKS shall be provided.
8.2 Isolation Valves
Isolation valves shall be of the Outside Screw and Yoke type with a rising stem.
Isolation valves shall be UL Listed and/or FM approved for firewater service.
8.3 Backflow Preventer
All backflow preventers shall be UL listed and / or FM approved, and listed for use in fire
protection service.
8.4 Valve Supervisory Switches
Valve supervisory switches shall be electrical; SPDT; with normally closed contacts.
They shall include design that signals controlled valve is in other than fully open position.
OS&Y switches shall monitor stem movement and shall be complete with mounting J-
bolts. Switch housing shall be finished in red baked enamel. Switches shall be UL
Listed and/or FM approved.
8.5 Pipes, joints and fittings
Piping and fittings used shall meet the requirements of NFPA 22. Pipe and fittings shall
meet the requirements of MQ-SP-P-5002 – PIPING – MATERIAL SPECIFICATION LINE
CLASS – PROCESS AND UTILITY PIPING
Copper pipe and fittings shall not be used.
8.6 Pipe Hangers and Supports
Pipe hangers and supports shall meet or exceed the requirements of NFPA 22 and MQ-
SP-P-5024 – PIPING SUPPORT ELEMENTS.

9.0 EXECUTION
All products and equipment shall be installed in accordance with MARAFIQ regulations, applicable
local codes and standards, the manufacturer's written installation instructions and Project
Specifications.
The firewater tank shall be installed in accordance the applicable NFPA standards.
Provisions shall be made to facilitate frequent inspection, testing and maintenance as described in
NFPA 25.
Protect all equipment and materials at all times.
Cover and protect equipment and materials from dirt, water, chemical or mechanical damage.

Close pipe openings with caps or plugs during installation. Cover and protect equipment materials
from dirt, water, chemical or mechanical damage.

10.0 INSTALLATION
All materials and equipment used in the installation of the firewater tank shall be new and the latest
design by the manufacturer.
The firewater tank shall be erected by fully experienced personnel, in the erection of a firewater
tank.
All materials, valves and devices essential to successful system operation shall be UL Listed and/or
FM approved.
Components that do not affect performance such as drain piping, drain valves and signs are not
required to be listed.
System components shall be constructed of materials that will resist corrosion or be suitably factory
protected from corrosion.
10.1 Piping
Installed piping, valves and fittings shall meet the requirements of NFPA 22 and Project
Specifications.
Make connections between underground and above-ground piping using an approved
transition piece strapped or fastened to prevent separation.
Close pipe openings with caps or plugs during installation.
Use pipes, fittings and hangers that resist corrosion; or apply a protective coating to all
unprotected exposed surfaces of the sprinkler system, where corrosive conditions exist
due to moisture or fumes from corrosive chemicals or both.
10.2 Backflow Prevention
Install a listed backflow prevention device where a public or potable water supply is to be
connected to the firewater tank.
10.3 Isolation Valves
At least one listed indicating valve shall be installed at each source of water supply.
Locate valves where they shall be readily accessible and free of obstructions.
Access and signage shall be obvious.
10.4 Drainage
Tank drain valves and auxiliary valves shall be installed in accordance with NFPA 22.
Locate all drain valves where they shall be readily accessible and free of obstructions.
Access and signage shall be obvious.
10.5 Hanging, Bracing and Restraint of System Piping
Installation of hangers, hanger rods, supports and fasteners shall be in accordance with
the requirements of NFPA 22 and Project Specifications.
10.6 Supervisory Switches
Supervise valves on sectional control valves, isolation valves and other valves on the
firewater tank in accordance with NFPA 22.

Mount switch so as not to interfere with normal operation of the valve.


10.7 Pressure Gauge
Provide a pressure gauge at locations required by NFPA 22.
10.8 Identification Signs
Provide identification signs for all system and water supply control valves with securely
attached identification signs in accordance with NFPA 22.
Provide identification signs at each valve to indicate its function and what it controls.
Identification signs shall be permanently marked weatherproof metal sign secured with
corrosion-resistant wire, chain, or other approved means.
10.9 Painting
Interior and exterior surfaces of the steel tanks shall be painted and protected in
accordance with the requirements of NFPA 22 and Project Specifications.

11.0 START-UP AND INITIAL OPERATION

11.1 Pipe Cleaning and Flushing


Aboveground and underground piping connecting to the firewater tank shall be flushed
thoroughly before connection is made to the firewater tank. The minimum flow rate shall
be at least that necessary to provide a velocity of 3 m/s (10 ft/s).
11.2 Corrosive Chemicals
Additives and corrosive chemicals, sodium silicate or derivatives of sodium silicate, brine
or other corrosive chemicals shall not be used for testing or stopping leaks.

12.0 TESTING
The firewater tank shall be tested in accordance with NFPA 22.
Upon completion of the tank construction, it shall be filled with water. Any leaks in the shell, bottom,
or roof (if the roof contains water) that are disclosed by the test shall be repaired by chipping or
melting out any defective welds and then re-welding.
The tank shall be tested as watertight.
Concealed work (including underground) shall be tested and approval prior to covering.
12.1 Retest
Any or all of the system component or portion which fail the specified tests shall be
retested after corrective measures have been taken.

13.0 CERTIFICATION
The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-built Drawings, maintenance and instruction
bulletins, and the applicable parts of the Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material
and tests certifying that the work has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and
specifications.

14.0 DELIVERY, HANDLING AND STORAGE


All products shall be inspected at time of delivery for damage and for compliance with specifications.

PROTECTION

All products shall be handled and stored as recommended by the manufacturer.


Materials shall be delivered in their original packages, containers, or bundles bearing the brand
name and the name of the material.
Pipe, fittings, and valves shall be stored with open ends sealed until removed for installation.
Materials shall be protected from weather, soil, and damage during delivery, storage, and
construction.
Any products that are damaged or found not to be in accordance with the specifications shall be
immediately replaced.
