CASUALTY 2
In theatre, John will be given an anaesthetic and his wound will be explored. The x-ray
which were taken by the radiographer will show you the exact site and extent of the
fracture. Dead and dirty tissue will be excised and any splinter of bone will be removed.
The surgeon will perform the operation using a “no touch” technique to reduce the
chances of infection.
When the surgeon is satisfied that the wound is as clean as possible, he will dust it off
with antibiotic powder. He will then suture it and cover it with sterile gauze dressing.
Any areas that are raw will be dressed with sterile Vaseline petroleum jelly gauze. The
surgeon will now be able to treat fractured. He will reduce the bones into their
anatomical position, and the leg will be taken back to an orthopaedic ward.
When a post-operative patient like John arrived in the ward, he is carefully lifted from
the stretcher and laid in a specially-prepared bed. The foot of the bed is often raised on
wooden blocks. The patient is placed on his back with head turned to one side. As he is
generally still unconscious, an artificial airway is in position and nurse stays with him to
ensure that airway is kept clear. She also checks his pulse and volume his color and the
rate and depth of respiration.

For every individual temperament and personality exists a nursing specialty. The pace
of a working environment can be fast and full of adrenaline, or a slower pace with lots
of time to spend bonding with patients and families, or somewhere in between. RNs
can have a great amount of pressure to do everything perfectly and quickly with
extremely high stakes, or they may work in an environment that is more relaxed with
basically "well" patients who want to chit-chat while they wait for their physician's
appointment. RNs can work with every age and population from very sick premature
newborns to the elderly at the end of life, from school children needing check-ups to
adults who are undergoing elective plastic surgery. The options are nearly endless.
