Generalized MPLS as the evolution of MPLS towards circuit-oriented

transport networks (SDH, DWDM, OTN…)
• Dynamically provisioning and protecting
connections (path/circuit) in an optical transport

Components

Routing • OSPF-TE with GMPLS extensions is used to exchange topology information

between the NEs

Signaling • RSVP-TE with GMPLS extension is used to exchange information between

neighboring nodes to establish or release a path across the network

Link • The link management protocol (LMP) runs between neighbor NEs and is used
to manage the TE links (supervision of control channel connectivity, verification
Management of the physical connectivity of the transmission links)

Nominal Route management

• It describes the service route in the network “as it should be”

• Using the output of the planning tool
• Diverse active routes are established to enable service when nominal route is unavailable

Nominal Route reversion
• Nominal Route is the output of the network planning tool
• It cannot be dynamically changed by the control plane and remains fully consistent with the
planning tool
• Exclusive use of Nominal Route resources ensures reversion after repair

Why is it important?
• Networks are planned and optimized
Active Route based on provisioned resources

Principle
• O-SNCP is set up for each service
• Restoration mechanism creates a new O-SNCP path after failure recovery,
providing “fully protected status” of the restored path

Benefits

Architecture for provisioning and restoration
• In order to enable path provisioning and photonic restoration, the WDM
optical architecture has to provide:
• Switchable (directionless) add/drop ports to allow rerouting of a service in
case of failure
• Tunable transponders and colorless add/drop ports to maximize the chance to
find an alternative path. GMPLS is however also possible with colored
interfaces
