Active Ingredients:
The active ingredient that has significant pharma-cological
action in amla is designated by Indian scientists as
'phyllemblin'. The other ingredients present are gallic acid,
tannins, pectin, and ascorbic acid (Vitamin C).
It is a tonic, has a haematinic and lipalytic function. It is one
of the strongest rejuvenatives in Indian pharmacopoeia. It
contains 30 times the amount of Vitamin C found in

Amla or Indian gooseberry (Emblica officinalis) is the fruit of this deciduous tree found mainly
in India. This plant belongs to the family Euphorbiaceae. The fruit of this plant is round shaped
with vertical stripes. It is greenish yellow in color and tastes sour. The fruit is fibrous in nature.

Pharmacology
Emblica officinalis is effective in the treatment of amlapitta [peptic ulcer]and in dyspepsia.
The fruits exhibit hypolipiadaemic and antiatherosclerotic effects in rabbits & rats. The fruit
extract has antimutagenic activity on certain directly acting mutagens in some strains of
Salmonella typhimurium.The extract of amla also has antimicrobial properties. Amlaki is an
antioxidant with free radical scavenging properties which may be due to the presence of
high levels of super oxide dismutase.

Pharmacology : Emblica Officinalis or Amla is an antioxidant with free radical scavenging properties due to the
presence of high level super oxide dismutage. The tannins (Phylemblin ) isolated from the ethanolic extract of fruit
pulp showed mild depressant action on CNS and also had a spasmolytic activity. The alcoholic extract has been
found to have anti-viral properties. It has shown an increase in the cardiac glycogen and decrease in serum GOT,
GPT and LDH suggesting a cardio protective action. The extract nourishes and prevents ageing.

Therapeutic use : Anti oxidant, Antacid. It is one of the ingredients in Triphala and useful in dyspepsia, constipation,
piles, enlarged liver and spleen. It is also useful in cardiac diseases. It is considered as one of the foremost
