1.0 GENERAL
This specification contains the minimum design, installation, testing and commissioning
requirements for a Standpipe and Hose System. The Standpipe and Hose System is to
assure the safety of the occupants in the building during a fire. The design of the Standpipe
and Hose System shall conform to this specification and the complete Standpipe and Hose
System shall be fully compatible to all components supplied.
This specification shall describe the requirements for a Class I, II, and III Fire Hose
Standpipe.
1.1 References
The referenced codes and standards are intended to provide an acceptable level of
quality for materials, products and workmanship. In case of conflict between these
standards and the text of this Specification, the more stringent shall govern.
The latest revision of the referenced codes and standards shall be used as a
minimum guide. In case of conflict, the Contractor shall propose equipment,
materials and processes conforming to one group of codes and standards.

2.0 DEFINITIONS
All works undertaken in relation to this Specification are to be completed in full compliance
with the respective health and safety requirements established by the following:
MARAFIQ Standards
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Legislation, Regulation, Standards and Codes.
In the absence of any of the above, best accepted industry practice shall be employed
throughout.
Backflow preventers shall be used where potable water could be contaminated through
siphoning or back pressure from fire water piping.
4.0 SUBMITTALS
The Contractor shall submit to MARAFIQ, the following items for review and approval before
commencing the work:
Compliance Statement
Submit certificates from the manufacturer as evidence that the products meet these
Specifications and the referenced standards and codes.
Statements of NFPA compliance and UL listing, as applicable.
Contractor's Material and Test Certificate as described in NFPA 14.

Hydraulic calculations
Hydraulic calculations shall be prepared on forms that include a summary sheet, detailed
worksheet and a graph sheet or by using computer program accepted by MARAFIQ.
Product Data
Product data shall include principal dimensions, general construction and material for
each item intended to be furnished and installed.
Manufacturer's catalog data for all hose valves, hoses, hose cabinets, isolation valves,
check valves, alarm valves and all other accessories and system components, including
but not limited to:
Installation Instructions
Submit copies of the manufacturer's installation and maintenance instructions for all
equipment. Include valve data and servicing instructions.
Shop Drawings
Working plans, prepared according to NFPA 14.
Complete field detail, shop fabrication and installation drawings of supply piping, including
locations of hose valves, isolation valves, standpipe, showing routing of all piping,
location of hangers, supports, pipe restraints, inserts, sleeves, escutcheon plates,
inspector test valve, and other accessories.
Such plans shall be clear, legible and drawn to scale.
The plans shall also describe all system components.
The plans shall include an elevation diagram.
Define water service and connection with main supply.
Show drain locations on drawings.
Submit Coordination Drawings
Coordinate the location, signage, keying and access of isolation valves, hose valves and
zone valves as required by Project Specifications.
Coordinate location of drains shown on plumbing drawings with requirements of fire hose
standpipe system.
Hydraulic Calculations
The hydraulic calculations for the fire hose standpipe system shall be a computer
generated hydraulic calculation program, such as HASS, Elite, or Pipenet. The
calculations shall meet the requirements of NFPA 14 and shall be printed in a standard
NFPA format.
As-Built Drawings
Clearly indicate fire hose standpipe systems, locations and symbols on the Shop
Drawings and As-built plans.
Clearly indicate valves, alarms and controls locations.
Identify any variation from Contract Drawings.

Submit data conforming to NFPA 14 for maintenance of a fire hose standpipe system.
Equipment manufacturer recommended spare parts and tools list.
Operation and Maintenance Manuals.
Test Reports
Accurately record and report the methods of testing, times and dates of the test,
witnesses to the test, and the results of the test.
Indicate and interpret test results for compliance with performance requirements in NFPA
14.
Include Contractor's Material and Test Certificate for aboveground and underground
piping.
The Contractor shall be responsible for the quality of work and shall develop and propose
programs and methods of construction and testing to achieve the specified quality to the
approval of MARAFIQ.
6.1 General
A Standpipe and Hose System shall be provided as required by Project
Specifications. The Class type of Standpipe and Hose Systems to be provided shall
follow the requirements of the Project Specifications.

Design of the fire hose standpipe system shall be in accordance with NFPA 14, this
specification and Project Specification.
The design of the system shall be complete with all necessary accessories for proper
operation.
System design and installation shall reflect high quality professional work that properly
accounts for practical maintenance concerns and aesthetic concerns, as well as meets the
design requirements.
Components within the protected spaces shall be designed to withstand the elevated
temperatures which could occur during a fire.
The piping system shall be sized in accordance with a hydraulic calculation technique to
ensure availability of flows and pressures required for correct performance of the system.
This specification includes piping, fire hose cabinets (and related equipment), fire department
connections, and all other related appurtenances for a fire hose standpipe systems.
The fire hose standpipe system shall not prevent access to equipment for routine
maintenance.
Isolation valves shall be readily accessible, and its location clearly and permanently indicated.
Provisions should be made in the design of the system to perform testing and maintenance.
In all cases, a detailed layout shall be made of the fire hose standpipe system and equipment.
Duration of the firewater supply shall meet the requirements of NFPA and Project
Specification.
All backflow preventers shall be UL listed and / or FM approved, and listed for use in
fire protection service.
8.0 PRODUCTS
All goods and products covered by these Specifications shall be procured, when available,
from an in-Kingdom manufacturer. Procurement of all goods and products manufactured out-
of-Kingdom must be approved by MARAFIQ. All products, system components and hardware
shall be in compliance with NFPA 14 and Project Specifications. Only listed materials and
devices shall be used in the installation of the fire hose standpipe system. Components that
do not affect system operation, such as drain valves and signs, shall not be required to be
listed.
System components shall be rated for the maximum working pressure to which they are
exposed, but not less than 12.1 bar (175 psi). System components installed outside, or in the
presence of a corrosive atmosphere, shall be constructed of materials that will resist corrosion
or shall be suitably protected from corrosion.
The equipment, materials, valves and other devices installed shall be UL listed and/or FM
approved.
All fire department connections and fire hose valves shall be fully coordinated and matched
with Local Fire Department requirements. No single thread type or coupling shall be
purchased before confirming and fulfilling Local Fire Department conditions.
Pipeline strainers shall be specifically listed for use in firewater supply connections.
Strainers shall be capable of removing from the water all solids of sufficient size to
obstruct the fire hose spray nozzles. Strainers shall be installed so as to be
accessible for flushing or cleaning.
The filter housing shall be carbon steel; for use in salt/brackish water it shall be
internally epoxy coated. Filter element material to be stainless steel (316L).
8.19 Identification Signs
Provide identification signs for all system and water supply control valves, sectional
valves, riser control valves, drain valves, test and drain connections and alarm
devices with securely attached identification signs in accordance with NFPA 14.
Provide identification signs at each valve to indicate its function and what it controls.
Provide hydraulic design information signage as required by NFPA 14.
Identification signs shall be permanently marked weatherproof metal sign secured
with corrosion-resistant wire, chain, or other approved means.
The installation of signs required by NFPA 14 shall be verified.
All products shall be inspected at time of delivery for damage and for compliance with
specifications.
Materials shall be delivered in their original packages, containers, or bundles bearing the
brand name and the name of the material.
Pipe, fittings, valves, hoses, and fire fighting equipment shall be stored with open ends sealed
until removed for installation.
Materials shall be protected from weather, soil, and damage during delivery, storage, and
construction.
Any products that are damaged or found not to be in accordance with the specifications shall
be immediately replaced.
Cabinets shall be shipped without door glass. Glass shall be shipped separately, properly
packaged to prevent breakage.
Store cabinets, glass and accessories as recommended by the manufacturer above ground
and in a dry place.
10.0 INSTALLATION
All products and equipment shall be installed in accordance with this specification, Project
Specification, the manufacturer's written installation instructions and applicable codes and
standards.

Provide access doors or panels where control or drain valves are located behind plaster or
gypsum walls or ceilings.
The fire hose standpipe system shall be installed by fully experienced and specialized parties.
Protect piping as per NFPA 14. Protect all equipment and materials at all times.
Close pipe openings with caps or plugs during installation. Cover and protect equipment
materials from dirt, water, chemical or mechanical damage.
13.0 TESTING
The fire hose standpipe system shall be tested in accordance with NFPA 14 and Project
Specifications.
13.1 Retest
If any or all of the system components fail, the specified tests shall be retested after
corrective measures have been taken.
14.0 CERTIFICATION
The Contractor shall prepare and submit a set of As-built Drawings and hydraulic calculations
of the system, maintenance and instruction bulletins, and the applicable parts of the
Contractor’s material and test certificates covering material and tests certifying that the work
has been completed and tested in accordance with plans and specifications.
