Maintenance Terms

Availability: The ability of equipment to perform required function over a stated period of time.

Breakdown: Failure that results in non-availability of equipment.

Condition Monitoring: The continuous and periodic measurement and interpretation of data to infer the
condition of equipment to determine its need for maintenance.

Failure: The termination of the ability of equipment to perform its required function .

Feedback: A report on the success or failure of an action to achieve its desired objectives which can be
used to improve a process.

Forced Outage: The outage due to the unscheduled stoppage of equipment.

Inspection: The process of measuring, examining, testing or otherwise detecting any deviation from
specification.

Maintenance History: A history record showing repairs, spares etc., used to assist maintenance planning.

Maintenance Schedule: A comprehensive list of items (equipment) and the maintenance tasks required,
including the intervals at which maintenance should be performed.

Overhaul: A comprehensive examination and restoration of equipment or a major part, thereof to an


acceptable condition.

Refurbishment: Extensive work intended to bring equipment up to acceptable functional conditions,


often involving improvements.

Repair: The restoration of equipment to an acceptable condition by the refurbishment, replacement or


overhaul of damaged or worn parts.

Running Maintenance: Maintenance which is carried out while the equipment is in service.

Shutdown Maintenance: Maintenance which is carried out while the equipment is out of service.

Spares Stock: Items available for maintenance purposes or for the replacement of defective parts.

Work Order: A written instruction specifying the work that needs to be carried out, including details of
spares, staffing requirement, etc.

Work Requisition: A document requesting work that needs to be carried out.

Work Specification: A document describing the way in which the work is to be carried out. It may define
materials tools time standards and procedures.
