A. Experientially Based
As Gordon Fee has commented, "it is probably fair - and
even important - to note that in general the Pentecostals'
experience has preceded their hermeneutics. In a sense, the
Pentecostal tends to exegete his experience."3 Typical in this
regard is William George Olson's book, The Charismatic Church:
It is not my intention... to attempt to develop a theology of
the Holy Spirit... My immediate concern is with personal
experience - how it relates to, and has affected, the
development of the structure of the Church.4
Pentecostalism's orientation around "experiential Christ-
ianity" has its evident strengths.5 The encounter with the Holy
Spirit that lies at the heart of this movement has often been a
"transforming moment."6 Spiritual renewal has resulted which
has transfigured relationships within the family, church,
community and work-place. Personal testimony by Pentecostals
has encouraged the whole church to understand afresh the
power of the Spirit and the reality of the church as a life-
movement. Pentecostalism has forced the church to consider
again how it can "preach about Jesus making the lame to walk,
the dumb to talk, the deaf to hear, the blind to see, the leper to
be cleansed, and the dead raised to life, and then let it all be
treated as something irrelevant to our life and time."
B. Biblically Authorized?
Despite its assets for itself and the wider church, Pente-
costalism's experiential focus has carried with it certain historic
liabilities. Walter Hollenweger's dedication of his book, The
Pentecostals, illustrates something of the bittersweet character
of Pentecostalism's legacy. He writes: "To my friends and
teachers in the Pentecostal movement who taught me to love
the Bible and (to) my teachers and friends in the Presbyterian
church who taught me to understand it."8 Although Pente-
costalism would theoretically assert that unless it can support its
position biblically it should not continue to exist, in practice its °
"doctrine tends to be based more upon experience than upon
careful study of the Bible."9 Here has been a major obstacle
which Pentecostals have had to face. Pentecostals, suspicious
of the merely formal academic enterprise, have too often
accepted simple, uncritical explanations of the Bible which have
proven erroneous.
