Business Information System report

Slide 1 Introduction of self

Slide 2 Content
Slide 3 Read the definition of Business Information System
Business firms and other organizations rely on information
systems to carry out and manage operations, interact with
customers and suppliers, and compete in the marketplace.

Slide 4 Read information system

Slide 5 People: Every system needs people if it is to be useful. Often

the most overlooked element of the system are the people,
probably the component that most influence the success or
failure of information systems. This includes "not only the users,
but those who operate and service the computers, those who
maintain the data, and those who support the network of
computers.

Software: Sometimes abbreviated

as SW and S/W, software is a collection of instructions that
enable the user to interact with a computer, its hardware, or
perform tasks. Without software, most computers would be
useless. For example, without your Internet browser software,
you could not surf the Internet or read this page. Without
an operating system, the browser could not run on your
computer.

Example
Antivirus Norton, McAfee
Internet Browser Google Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer
Spreadsheet Excel
Operating System Android, Windows, Linux, mcOS, iOS
Presentation Powerpoint
Word Processor Microsoft word
Hardware: The term hardware refers to machinery. This
category includes the computer itself, which is often referred to
as the central processing unit (CPU), and all of its support
equipment. Among the support, equipment are input and output
devices, storage devices and communications devices.

Data: Data are facts that are used by programs to produce

useful information. Like programs, data are generally stored in
machine-readable form on disk or tape until the computer
needs them.

Procedures: Procedures are the policies that govern the

operation of a computer system. "Procedures are to people
what software is to hardware" is a common analogy that is used
to illustrate the role of procedures in a system.

Feedback: it is another component of the IS, that defines that

an IS may be provided with a feedback (Although this
component isn't necessary to function).
Data is the bridge between hardware and people. This means
that the data we collect is only data until we involve people. At
that point, data is now information

Slide 6 in this diagram, we can see the pyramid model of four level of
information system based on the people who use the system
the nature of the task and informational requirements of the
following people

Slide 7 in this triad, it shows the interaction of the people in the

business processes while the business processes are the
goal-oriented activities conducted by the business in between
them the information technology like the hardware/software
use to facilitate the business activities
Slide 8 Transaction Processing System are operational-level
systems at the bottom of the pyramid

They are usually operated directly by the employee/workers or

frontline staff which provide the key datasysyte required to
support the management of operations

Examples of TPS

 Payroll systems
 Order processing systems
 Reservation systems
 Stock control
 Systems for payments and funds transfers

Slide 9 Management Information System are used by middle

managers to help ensure the smooth running of the
organization in the short medium term. The highly structured
information provided by these system allows the managers to
evaluate an organization’s performance by comparing currect
with previous outputs

MIS are built on the data provided by the TPS

Examples of MIS

 Sales management systems

 Inventory control systems
 Budgeting systems
 Management reporting systems (MRS)
 Personnel (HRM) systems

The role of MIS

 Based on internal information flows

 Support relatively structured decisions
 Inflexible and have little analytical capacity
 Used by lower and middle managerial levels
 Deals with the past and present rather than the future
 Efficiency oriented

Slide 10 Decision Support System can be seen as a knowledge based

system

Used by senior manager, which facilitates the creation of

knowledge and allows its integration into the organization.

These systems are often used to analyze existing structured

information and allow managers to project the potential effects
of their decisions into the future.

Such systems are usually interactive and are used to solve ill
structured problems. They offer access to databases, analytical
tools, allow ”what if” simulations, and may support the
exchange of information within the organization

Functions of a DSS

 Manipulate and build upon the information from a MIS

and /or TPS to generate insights and new information

Examples of DSS
 Group decision support system
 Computer supported co-operative work
 Logistics systems
 Financial planning systems
 Spreadsheet models

Slide 11 Executive Information Systems are strategic-level information

systems that are found at the top of the pyramid. They help
executives and senior managers analyze environment in which
the organization operates, to identify long term trends, and to
plan appropriate courses of action.

Functions of EIS
Organizes and presents data and information from both
external data and sources and internal MIS or TPS in order to
support and extend the inherent capabilities of senior
executives.
