TI - Effects of the waste cooking oil on composting of swine manure, 1: Effects of
the additional amounts of the waste cooking oil
AB - This experiment was conducted to study effects of waste cooking oil (WCO) on
the composting of swine manure. Three composting treatments were prepared; 1) a
basal composting material (a basal compost) mixture of 50kg of swine manure and
12.5kg of sawdust, 2) the basal compost added with 6.9kg of WCO and 3) the basal
compost added with 14.0kg of WCO. The C/N ratio of these composting materials were
approximately 20, 30, and 40, respectively. Compost materials were fermented in
experimental composting boxes (150L) maintained under aerobic condition by
supplying air from the bottom. Composting materials with WCO produced more VFA
(volatile fatty acids) and had lower pH and temperature than the basal composting
material during the initial fermentation period. The lower pH caused decrease in
the emission of ammonia during the composting process. As the addition of WCO
increased the heat value in compost materials, it resulted in prolonged maturation
period and in increased evaporation from composting materials. It was concluded
that the addition of WCO to the composting material is useful as a ource of energy
for the generation of fermentation heat in the composting process
