Getting My Puppy

I jerk awake at the sound of my alarm clock. Beeping, the sound is impaled into my head.

Throwing my blue snowman blanket against the wall, I remember today is not an ordinary day.

Today, May 12th, the day I get to go get my puppy. I can not believe the day I have been

waiting for my whole life has arrived. Rushing, I finish brushing my teeth in two minutes. While

throwing my hair up in a ponytail, I am scattering around trying to find what to wear. After

seconds of debating, I decide to pick out my Penn State sweatshirt with athletic shorts, high

socks, and gray sneakers.

Excitedly, I zoom out of my room and rush downstairs, tripping over myself as I go

down the long, steep steps. Making eye contact with my mom, she can tell I'm excited through

my wide, bright blue eyes. Placed on the table is my breakfast for the day. The moment I eye my

food, I started to eat it. My bagel, baked to perfection. The crunchy, golden, peanut butter bagel

fills my stomach.

Sprinting to the car, I realize we forgot to put the carry crate in the car. Annoyed, I run

back into my house and grab the crate. Carrying the big, medal, black crate I throw it in the car.

When thrown in the car it makes a big bang sound that echoes throughout the car and my parents

sigh in disappointment. Driving quickly, we make it to Maryland in about three hours. After

driving along a dirt road for awhile we made it. Finally, after the brutal car ride, my family and I

all jump out and rush to the front door of the house.

We knock two times and they happily open the door. We are told to take our shoes off

and then we enter. My heart is beating fast, nervous as to what it will be like inside the house.

Although when they open the door, happiness and joy overflows my body and heart. The

environment in this place is so welcoming it makes me feel at home. Out of the corner of my

eye, I see the breeders and their kids along with other buyers.

A dozen of whimpering Australian Labradoodle puppies surround me, running around

aimlessly. I glance to my right and see even more puppies in a play pen, wildly tackling each

other. I scurry over to pet them. My hand tingles as I touch their silky, soft fur. Carefully, I scoop

up a brown one into my arms holding him closely to my chest. His musky smell clogs my

nostrils leaving me to only smell puppy air. I snatch up another puppy, holding him tightly,

feeling the heat coming off of him. After cuddling with the puppies for awhile, it’s time to

choose the one we want to take home.

Chocolate, caramel, cream, and apricot puppies stroll around me, each calling me to pick

them. An apricot coated puppy lays down right next to me, catching my eye. He seemed to be

one of the smaller puppies in the litter, but I pick him up anyway. I examine him, trying to figure

out what was so special about him that made me so intrigued. He seemed happy, and I watch his

wagging tail go back and forth. His long pink tongue escapes his mouth and glides slowly across

my ankle, leaving it wet and slobbery. I notice his turquoise collar, my favorite color. I think that

this must be a sign, and I tell my mom that I’ve made my decision.

We kindly tell the breeders that we would like the puppy with the turquoise collar. They

look at us happily and lead us to a table to fill out paperwork. My parents follow while I stay

behind and play with the puppies some more. I give my future puppy a kiss and immediately

begin to grow connected to him. I sit on the dark tiled floors and he sat himself down right on top

of me. I run my fingers through his silky fur, imagining the days and years to come with him. A

smile forms on my face, grinning from ear to ear and inside I feel as though my puppy is smiling

too.

About 15 minutes later my parents come back to find me on my back with my puppy

lying on my stomach. I make my way up to normal height, dodging the multiple puppies around

me. My family and I retrieve a blue and green patterned collar and leash for him and a mini

white bone. As we are leaving, we make sure to say goodbye to the rest of the puppies and the

breeders. We climb back into the car and get our new puppy settled into his crate for the long

drive home. I knew then that I had met my new best friend, Toby.
