FIRST LONG EXAM 31 August 2016

INSTRUCTIONS. This exam is for 80 minutes. Use black or blue pen only. Show ALL necessary
solutions and BOX all final answers. The use of electronic devices is not allowed. Any form of
cheating in examinations or any act of dishonesty in relation to studies such as plagiarism shall be
subject to disciplinary action.

I. Do as indicated.
1. Use long division to find the quotient and remainder when 3x4 + x3 − 4x2 + 5 is divided by
x2 + x − 1. (3 pts.)
2. Let U = {o, l, y, m, p, i, c, s}, A = {c, o, i, l}, B = {m, i, s, o} and C = {s, l, y}. Find
(Ac ∩ C) × B c . (2 pts.)
3. If X = [−5, −1) ∪ (0, 4], Y = [−3, 2), and Z = (−∞, −2), express (X ∩ Y )\Z as a union of
intervals. (3 pts.)
4. Factor completely. (3 pts. each)

(a) a3 − 8b3 − 6a2 b + 12ab2 (b) 9x4 − 7x2 y 2 + y 4

II. Perform the indicated operations and simplify. Assume all rational expressions are well-defined.

III. Write TRUE if the statement is always true. Otherwise, write FALSE. (1 pt. each)
1. If A and B are finite sets, then A × B is equivalent to B × A.
2. If x is an element of sets A and B, then x ∈ (Ac ∩ B)c .

For nos. 3 and 4, let a, b, c and d be real numbers.

3. The statement a(bc) = (bc)a is justified by the associative axiom for multiplication.
4. If 0 < a < b and 0 < c < d, then ca − cb > ad − bd.
5. If z ∈ C, then z · z is always a positive real number.
