Abstract on Angus Deaton’s The Great Escape: Health, Wealth, and the Origins of Inequality

Deaton’s The Great Escape established the correlation between the heath, standard of
living, income and equality over time and across nations. The book highlights interesting
questions like if the income growth adds considerably to a better and improved health and in
developing human capital. He found out later in the book that this may not be possible since
saving lives in weak states comprised of poor people is not affluent. It is inevitable to improve
health without the presence of income growth. To add, he also emphasized that these aspects
stated are part of human capital development.
