The float level affects the mixture throughout the entire range. — Although it is possible to alter the fuel mixture by changing the float level, itis not recommended, STARTING/IDLE CIRCUIT When the choke valve is opened [knob up), fuel is metered by the starter jet and is mixed with aie from the primary ait passage to provide a rich mixture to ease starting, When the choke vaive is closed (knob down}, it reduces the mixture to a more normal level for idling, With the knob down, the actual flow of fuel/airis regulated by the adjustment of the chokelidle speed knob. The end af the thresded choke/idle speed knob acts as» ‘miniature throttle valve in the primary ait jet passage. With the nob threaded all the way down, it cuts off al fuel/air from this passage (no idle speed) and with it threaded all the ‘way up, it allows maximum amount of fuel/air through this passage (high idle speed). + This circuit has two main functions; to start a cold engine {knob up) or to supply encugh fuel/air to allow the engine to ile (knob down and adjusted accordingly. SLOW CIRCUIT Fuel is metered by the slow jet and ie mixed with air that has been metered by the air screw. The mixture enters the venturi through the bypass and stow jet circuits, + This circuit affects idle-to-1/4 throttle, — The mixture can be altered by changing the slow jet or the air screw adustment. MAIN CIRCUIT As the throttle valve is raised, fuel is metered by the needle jet, jt needle, and the throttle valve cutaway. The fuel is mixed With air from the alr jet and enters the venturi at the nozzle + This beginning portion of the main circuit affects 1/8-t0-3/4 throttle, = In the 1/8-t0-1/4 throttle range, the mixture can be altered oy changing the jet needie O.D. —In the 1/4-t0-3/4 throttle range, the mixture can be altered by adjusting the jet needle clip position, (1) FLOAT VALVE (2) FLOAT (1) ORIFICE (9) SLOW JET = (a) STARTER JET (2) CHOKE/IOLE SPEED KNOB. CARBURETOR OPERATION The operation of the carburetor is broken into throttle opening ‘segments; each of the metering units is reponsible for one seg: ment. There is always overlap from one segment to the next, so any change will always atfect the next segment up or down, Be- cause of this, making carburetor adjustments for altituce or temperatura should be done in a methodical manner. See page 45. MINOR CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT (Idle mixture end idle speed) To adjust the idle speed, warm up the engine and push the choke/idle speed knob down to the off position. Tuen the choke/idle speed knob clockwise to decrease engine speed, oF ounterclackwise to increase engine speed. NOTE + For a stable idle speed, turn the choke/ide speed knab at least 6 turns (36 clicks) counterclockwise from the fully seated position, Idle mixture can be adjusted by turning the airscrew: turning it in ichens the mixture, while turning it out leans the mixture. To adjust: turn the al screw in until it seats lightly, thon beck it ut to the initial setting INITIAL OPENING: "88: 1-1/2 tums out Atter ‘88: 2 turns out Start the engine. Whan the engine is warm enough to run with ‘out the choke, make fine adjustments in the air scraw setting Until the engine revs up smoothi ‘Test the adjustment by accelerating away from a slow corner. Readjust as necessary ‘A combination of a slightly rich mixture and an idle speed that's 2et 100 high mey lead to plug fouling when srutting off for tight secticns of the track. Reduce idle speed if this occurs. MAJOR CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT (For temperature and altitude) 1). Check that the carburetor is adjusted to the stendard set: tings.
