Terrorism

Terrorism means the use of force or threat against a person or group or country for political
or personal interests. It is the burning question of today as there is a global wave of terrorism
around. Terrorists of all races and creeds are active individually or collectively, locally or globally
in selling death, destruction, horror, harassment and insecurity. Terrorists attack the civilian
population to create terror or general harassment in society. They resort to bombing, killing,
hijacking and large-scale destruction of property. A wave of terror and insecurity has travelled
around the globe. People are wonderstruck and terrified at cruel activities of terrorists in spite of
great measures of security and defence. Though global war against terrorism has been afoot since
the destruction of American World Trade Centre on September 11,2001, the monster of
terrorism is still very much there.
Narrow-mindedness, fanaticism, fundamentalism intolerance and religious extremism are
considered the main causes of terrorism. Political and religious extremists do not tolerate their
opponents and try to eliminate them. Some culprits do it for temptations of money. They are blind
agents of other forces. It is also a fact that some intelligence agencies cause terrorism in enemy
countries to destabilize them. Spreading confusion, misunderstanding, destruction and harassment
among the weak are the aims of terrorists.

“Terrorism is the tactic of demanding the

impossible and demanding it at gunpoint.”

Almost all agree that widespread terrorism is all due to unjust global political and economic
systems, poverty, frustrations, injustice, cruelty, exploitation, sectarianism, religious militancy,
state-sponsored terrorism, double standards of superpowers, paralyzed UNO and trouble spots like
Kashmir, Palestine and Chechenia. The oppressed, exploited and frustrated ones want to punish
certain groups and countries in their own way and hence, resort to terrorism. To blame a certain
group or to make some country scape-goat in the name of ending terrorism is only a wild goose
chase. Is America not doing the same? Wordsworth was deeply moved when he said:

“And much it grieved my heart to think,

What man has made of man.”

Recent hijacking of American passenger Airlines and crashing them against the towers of
the World Trade Centre in New York and Pentagon in Washington is probably the worst incident
of terrorism in the world. Americans want to punish some individuals and countries whom they
blame for terrorist activities in various parts of world. Usama Bin Ladin and some Muslim
countries are their specific targets. Hence better sense must prevail to combat and remove terrorism
effectively.
Islam remains the most misunderstood and misinterpreted religion in the West. A religion
that stands for peace and justice has been mispresented as a religion of war and fanaticism. The
Muslims are depicted by Western media as extremist, fanatics, terrorists, backward and devoid
of disciplines. On religious issues, they are emotional and intolerant. American and European print
and electronic media have launched poisonous propaganda against Islam and Muslim world.
Fundamentalists believe that they are the right people and all the rest are heretics.
The so-called war against terrorism in Afghanistan, Iraq, Occupied Kashmir, Palestine,
and Chechenia is being called war against Islamic extremism. Why is the Muslim world main
target? Have the Muslims clean hands in this regard?

“Ashamed is humanity of the wounds given by thee.”

On the other hand, there is no organized Muslim media anywhere in the Muslim world that
can refute this Western disinformation and give an accurate picture of what is really going on.
The West, in fact, is under the psychological pressure of the glorious past of the Muslims. Soon
after the demise of the Soviet Union, Islam was perceived as the only ideological force to
overcome the whole world. This all calls for knowing the true significance of Jihad and the real
responsibility of the so-called Jihadis.
The Muslim concept of Islamic fundamentalism is the strict adherence to the age of the
Holy Prophet (PBUH). It is an effort to implement the Islamic principles of the Golden age in the
world of today for the revival of Islam. Jihad is totally different from the acts of terrorism. Jihad
means exertion, striving, and endeavor for the cause of God. Its object is to bring an end to
oppression and aggression against Islam. Its object is not to propagate Islam by the use of sword.
It is not anti-west bigotry and the revival of the ancient Islamic concept of expansionism.
The Quran has emphasized Jihad for noble cause:

“Fight against those who treat helpless men, women and children cruelly.”

Jihad stands for performing noble deeds for elevating moral character and for seeking
refinement to attain nearness to Allah. Jihad is necessary for the supremacy of truth, justice,
goodness, and fair-play over the forces of falsehood, injustice, evil and cruelty. Agreed that
conditions in this derailed and chaotic world are ripe for Jihad, but it is totally unwise to launch
Jihad unless the Jihadis set their own house in order. Jihad is justified when there is proper
preparations on religious, moral, social economic, cultural, educational, human and military fronts
to defeat the evil and evil-doers. With illiteracy, ignorance, corruption, disunity, sectarianism,
exploitation and other social and moral evils in their own ranks, how can they reform the world?
Al-Qaida and such other groups have paid no attention to this fact and have earned nothing
but bad name for Islam and the Muslim world-over. They should have launched social Jihad first
and, if necessary, military jihad later.
In the words of Adolf Hitler:

“Terrorism is the best political weapon for nothing

drives people harder than a fear of sudden death.”

Terrorism is different from the political or liberation movement. The Kashmir liberation
movement against India, the Palestine liberation movement against Israel and Chechenia
liberation movement against Russia cannot be regarded as the terrorist’s movements. They are
engaged in an armed struggle to get freedom from the cruel rules. They are fighting against
aggression.

“Trampled and divested is humanity

by the brutality and injustice.”

Islamic countries should act in unison to establish the true image and to spread the message
of Islam. They should take proper measures to counter the anti-Islam propaganda. They should
bring home to the world that being a religion of peace, justice, equality, and human welfare, Islam
condemns any form of terrorism.
Islam aims at the welfare of whole humanity and only it can bring about peace, progress
and prosperity in this troubled world. They should assure the world community that they do not
sponsor any sort of terrorism. However, they should not let America and other anti-Islam forces to
tarnish the image of Islam to gain their vested political, economic and hegemonic interests. They
can do it if they act upon the teachings of Islam, bring unity in their ranks, promote education and
science and adopt moderation and broad mindedness.
Terrorism is an evil. It must be fought against all levels. Governments and Nations must
join hands to crush this evil and its agents. At the same time, the United Nations must take steps
to remove the germs of dissatisfaction, deprivation, and injustice from various regions of the world.

“Observe good faith and justice towards all nations.

Cultivate peace and harmony with all.”
