About the Students

T he rigorous admission process for IIM Ranchi, reinforces the IIM hallmarks of setting high standard and encompassing
the very best. IIM Calcutta actively supported and guided the selection of candidates based on group discussions & interviews,
CAT (Common Admission Test) percentile set at 99.65 ensuring top 0.35 percent of the candidates appeared for the
examination. The strict criterion associated with need for diverse background has resulted in the selection of intellectually
capable and motivated students for all the batches.
The diversity and excellence is demonstrated through different academic backgrounds, industry exposure and other interests.
IIM Ranchi has students from some of the most august undergraduate colleges in India, to name a few, Indian Institute of
Technology, St Xavier's College Mumbai, Shri Ram College of Commerce, in the field of Engineering, Commerce, Fine Arts
and Bio-Technology. Many of our students have rich industry exposure with leading Companies in India like HSBC, L&T,
IBM, SAIL, Accenture, Vodafone and Tata Teleservices.
As we move our feet in this new century, India is poised to take a giant leap into the global economy, empowered by world-
class managerial capability spawned by the best Institutes in this country.
Being an integral part of 8th IIM, we all feel an extreme sense of pride in introducing this young Institute to the global arena.
Your support, encouragement and faith in this endeavor will be critical to our success as a leading management Institute.
About the Institute
02
C ontinuing the tradition of excellence in management education, as represented by the Indian Institutes of Management,
the eighth Indian Institute of Management was established at Ranchi in 2010. This was made possible with the extensive
support of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta and the Government of Jharkhand, working under the guidance of
HRD Ministry, Government of India.
IIM Ranchi has been set up to serve the increasing demand for quality managers in the corporate world, whilst striving for
excellence and working towards its core value of inclusive growth for the greater good.
IIM Ranchi currently offers a two year PGDM as its flagship program and has launched PGPEX recently for research work.
The course outline has been meticulously designed, and is being delivered by world-renowned faculty of IIM Calcutta and
XLRI Jamshedpur. The course structure involves the updated and changing needs of modern management, recognized
and incorporated by the unique approach of teaching and learning at the IIMs, which sets them apart from other business
schools. The pedagogy involves special emphasis on application of theoretical concepts and understanding the intricacies
of management.

Chairman’s Address
Dear Friends

The Indian economy has left the global recession behind and is now once again heading towards attaining a growth rate
of over 9%. New manufacturing capacities are being created and foreign investors are seeing attractive business opportunities
in this country. The employment potential is growing, especially for persons with good education and skills. The products of
Institutes of Management have always been in high demand, and I expect this situation to continue for many years in the
future.

IIM Ranchi is a new institution which started PGP classes in 2010. The Board of Governors are determined that it should
grow into an institution of excellence, where the quality education and the campus experience compares with the best
management schools in India. Being new, gives us the opportunity to learn from the experience of other IIMs and incorporate
changes which will help us move faster towards our goal. The faculty of IIM Calcutta and XLRI Jamshedpur are helping us
to develop all our educational systems and is also teaching most of the courses. I believe we could not have found a better
way to start.

We are also exploring possible ways of mobilizing funds which can be used for furthering the objective of attaining academic
excellence. We have already started attracting some experienced and reputed faculty to IIMR so that they can take over
from the faculty of IIMC and continue to strengthen our systems, and the quality of teaching.

The Board and I look forward to the continued support from industry and business organizations in India and abroad in our
endeavour to develop bright, young and highly motivated managers for them.

Best wishes.

Director’s Address
Dear All
It gives me immense pleasure to present the first batch of 44 students
for placement in leading organizations in India and abroad. We
basically selected students with high level of intelligence as seen by
our median CAT score of 99.65 percentile which is higher than that
of the leading IIMs. They have been taught by the best Finance faculty
from IIM Calcutta and the best in Marketing from the Industry. Three
of our students specializing in HRM did two terms in XLRI, which is
the best in the same area. Additionally, we have had faculty from
US, UK and Philippines imparting most up-to-date knowledge to our
students. We also used visiting faculty from the Industry to expose
them to practical aspects of business.

Our students have been exposed to courses on Inner Development

and Indian culture. They also are exposed to social problems and
environmental issues. A culture of humility, service and teamwork is
the hall-mark of every student and employee of this Institute. As an
example, I would like to cite the case of our senior students going
to the airport and railway station to receive every one of the junior
students.
04
Since our batch size is small, we have spent considerable amount
of time at the individual level to make our students ‘Industry-Ready’.
Above all, we put a lot of emphasis on character building and formation
of right attitudes required for survival in today’s complex organization.
I am sure that you will find our students well-rounded and suited to
effectively manage the people, process and technologies and contribute
to the growth and development of your organizations.

Best Wishes

Dean’s Address
Dear Friends
IIM Ranchi is perfectly poised to become the centre of Oriental Wisdom

and the finest temple of learning and wisdom in this part of the world.

Its key differentiator is not just its cutting edge curriculum or the galaxy

of leading faculty drawn from all over the world or even the quality

of its students. Instead, it is poised on a troika of factors. First, is the

humility of its students to learn and their readiness to contribute their

knowledge, skills and abilities fruitfully in the corporate world. Second,

is their ability to contextualize their learning in the emerging landscape

of business--an intersection of government, business and society.

Third, they have experienced personalization at both the levels: self

development and a voluntary selection of portfolio of courses based

upon their aptitude and career interests. Overall, the graduating batch

of students are endowed with the perfect combination of knowledge,

skills and attitude to manage uncertainties, resolve ambiguities and

lead ethically in this hyper competitive, hyper turbulent, diverse and

globalized world. I take immense pride in offering these budding

managers and leaders to your organization.

Student Activities

T he students at IIM Ranchi know that they are the building blocks of
a great Institute and the members of the torch-bearing batch. This
realization has added to the overall vitality of the batch and developed
a sense of responsibility in whatever they do.
When the students of the first batch had joined the Institute, IIM Ranchi
was merely a concept. A lot of work had to be done to transform it into
a reality. Any Institution is more than just bricks and mortars and a few
classrooms. There were traditions to be formed, expectations to be lived
upto and standards to be set. This challenged the students to bring out
their best, and then some more. The factor that drives the students here
is that whatever they do will be handed over to posterity.
For this reason, you will find that the students here are always occupied
with some or the other activities. While in one of the hostel rooms, a
heated discussion is on to decide the name of the marketing club, in
some other room you will find the IT committee planning the whole IT
infrastructure of the Institute.

12 The PGP Committee serves as the single point of contact between the students and the academic section of the college. Apart
from sorting out academic issues/grievances of the students, the Committee members are also required to ensure that all
communication by the college regarding assignments, schedules and various other academic affairs are directed towards the
students. This ensures a smooth functioning of the student body.

IT Committee
The IT Committee at IIM Ranchi was formed with the primary intent of integrating technology with learning. The students in this
Committee are not only responsible for establishing LAN/ WiFi connectivity in the campus but also for conceptualizing and designing
the IIM Ranchi website and students’ blog. Currently, the Committee is working on the implementation of the ERP and LMS
(Learning Management System). The infrastructure will be enhanced to include Smart Classrooms/ Library to facilitate learning
through course lectures as well as corporate interactions.

Sports and Cultural Committee

The Sports and Cultural Committee endeavors to develop cultural harmony amongst the students and a sense of freedom to
express and share our ideas “Sports do not build characters they reveal it”. We are shrouded by this question of ‘tell me about
your weakness and strengths’. Well sports can be helpful to give an insight in our own personality. Coming to ground realities
we have organized a lot of intra-college events like Badminton competition, TT tournament, Chess competition, Volleyball league
etc. This Committee is also responsible for monitoring various events happening at other B Schools and promotes participation
in these events.

Summer Placements 2011

IIM Ranchi, the 8th in the IIM fraternity, received great industry encouragement in the first year of its establishment. Despite
facing hurdles like not having an established system in place, any alumni base and lack of awareness in industry, IIM Ranchi
succeeded in having a fully paid summer internship. The fact characterizes a proper placement process for getting internship
offers for all students of the batch.
A diverse range of profiles were offered that included Corporate Finance, Financial Consulting, Strategy, Media Marketing, Hospitality
Management, IT Consulting apart from the regular profiles such as Sales & Marketing, Corporate Banking, Operations and HR.
Considering IIM Ranchi had the highest percentile CAT cut-off last year, various companies agreed to offer niche profiles to the
students. The role of financial markets analyst by CNBC Group was offered solely at IIM Ranchi. A market leader in its segment
offered a strategy role at the Marketing Director’s desk of the company. IIM Ranchi was the only IIM in the country to be offered
the coveted operations profile by Toyota. IIM Ranchi was among the few IIMs to have interns working at Nokia.
