They actually pop out from behind the board as they are released by the operator who stands behind. ‘The board is 3-sided, like a screen. The operator stands behind and releases each knife as Hines pretends to throw. There should be a hole for the operator to peep through to watch Hines. There should also be a hole for each knife to be thrown. Behind each knife is a carriage with a slot in which the knife rests and which carries the knife when released. The knife point is embedded in a wooden block which stops the knife from going all the way out the hole. The knife is held back by a lever and is mounted on a spring. When the lever is pulled by the operator, the spring causes the kknife to travel along the carriage and out the hole. This happens so quickly, due to the action of the spring, that the knife appears to have been thrown. THe Pajama Game ACT 14 Scene 1 (HINES enters from R. dancing to musical vamp.
