Today’s Topic:

The wonders of
watersheds!
So… what exactly is a watershed and why does it matter?

While watching this

video make a list of
places or parts of the
environment that are
part of a watershed. We
will share out at the end!
Now that we have a better understanding of what a watershed is…

Let’s make a model of one!

Step 1: The piece of paper represents our “land”. On your land add some
places you think might be part of a watershed. Look back on the list you
made from the video and add some of those elements to you land.
Step 2: Crumple up your paper, not too
tightly or we won't be able to see the
valleys and peaks of our “land”!
Step 3: Using a pencil or your black marker, trace along the
highest ridges on your paper. These ridges represent your
highest mountain peaks.
Step 4: Using your blue marker, trace along any inward
crease you you see, these represent valleys and the water
that flows through them.
Now we have some pretty good looking
models! Let’s use our new models to answer
some questions and make some hypotheses!
Using your model….

1. Imagine a huge rain cloud comes over your land and starts pouring rain!
Where is all that water going to flow to?

2. Let’s find the boundaries of our watershed…

3. Look at all the places you put on your land. Are these places safe from
potential hazards? If not, where would you move them to instead?
Thats a wrap!
Thank you all for your awesome participation
today! Stay safe, and have fun weekend!
What’s happening next week?
—We’ll be learning about FOREST ECOLOGY!
— Remember to bring a writing utensil and
something you can keep to write in.
