Ce COME met kee Tease INTRODUCTION : Presently tidal regulators and salt water exclusion dams (SWED) consist of concrete or masonry weirs, and are provided with manually or electrically operated vertical lft gates or vertical hinged (mitre) gates. During floods, these gates are opened with hoists after river water level reaches a predetermined level, for releasing water to sea, When there are no floods in river, these gates are kept in closed ‘condition during high tide to prevent the sea water entering the river. To ensure that upstream side is not submerged during monsoons, it is absolutely necessary to do round the clock monitoring of river and sea water levels and decide correct timing and extent of gate operation. This task is not only tedious, but also poses extra risk to the structure as failure of electricity or wrong judgment of gate operator that may lead to delayed, inadequate or non-opening of gates - can cause overtopping of tidal regulator itself and also cause flooding of villages & towns immediately on upstream side, Tidal Regulator & Tidal Barrage with vertical lift gates GodboleGates ® PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION (AUTOMATIC MODE) : Depending upon water levels on river and sea side, the automatic swing gate can be exposed to 5 different types of hydraulic conditions. Its behaviorinall these conditionsis given below:- Upstream Downstream Casel Or River side | OrSea side No water on u/s side (river side) as well as - am » disside (sea side) Gate remainsin closed position Casell No water on u/s side (river side) Water on d/sside (sea side) above gate sill level Gate remains in closed position Case I Uys side (river side) water level above gate F sill but lower than d/s side (sea side) water level \ Gate remains in closed position Thus, when both upstream (river side) and downstream (sea side) water levels are below gate sill level, gate remains in closed position. If upstream water level remains below gate sill and downstream water level rises above gate sill during high tide, the gate remains in closed position, preventing entry of sea water into the river. This is because downstream water pressure tends to close the gate. If there is very small flow in the river and upstream water level is above gate sil, but below downstream water level (this may happen during high tide), the gate stil remains in closed position, preventing entry of sea waterinto river. CaseIV Ujs side (river side) water level above gate sill and d/s side (sea side) water level below gate sill Gate opens out partially ifu/s level crosses predetermined opening level. If incoming discharge increases, the gate increases its extentof opening Upstream or Sectional River side view view CaseV (7 i] Us side (river side) water level above predetermined opening level, d/s side (sea side) water level above gate sill Upstream Or River sideGate opens out partially If difference between u/s and ds levels increases further (ie. if u/s water level increases in rising floods or d/s level drops down during low tide) the gate increases itsextentof opening & vice-versa Upstream or Sectional River side view view ‘When the downstream or sea level is below gate sill, and there is very small flow in river, the gate initially remains closed and stores water on u/s side, till a predetermined level (normally this is approx. 1/3 to 1/2 of gate height). When the inflow continues, and upstream water level exceeds this predetermined level, the gate automatically opens out to 2 small extent. This is because upstream water pressure tends to open the gate. Ifthe incoming discharge increases and upstream water level tends to rise further, the gate opens out further. On the other hand, ifthe incoming discharge reduces and upstream level tends to fall down, gate automatically reduces its extent and opening. When u/s water level falls below the predetermined level, the gate closes back completely. When the downstream water level is above gate sill evel (during high tide), the downstream water pressure provides an extra closing moment. In such condition, when there is fload in river, the upstream water level rises above the predetermined opening level by a small height (to provide extra opening moment) before the gate opens automatically. The extent of rise beyond predetermined level depends on height of d/s water level above gate sil. Asin previous case, with further rise & fallin upstream water level (without any change in d/s water level), the gate automatically increases and decreases its extent of opening respectively. Also, with further rise and fall in d/s water level (with same u/s level, the gate decreases and increases its extent of opening respectively GodboleGates CONSTRUCTION : The Swing gate consists of following components: (@) Embedded Parts: these comprise of i) a pair of trunnion girders embedded in the RCC piers ii) a pair of anchor girders for two way auto locking system iil) a pair of side seal seat support frames embedded in RCC piers & iv)asill beam embedded in weir body wall (b) Rotating gate leaf with a pair oftrunnion hubs (0 A pair of two way auto locking system supported on anchor girders (d) A Mono-rail gantry structure for supporting movable hoist & (@) A travelling wire rope drum hoist for emergency opening & closing operations of gate, when u/s water level is below pre-determined level Note : The design of automatic swing gate is protected under the "Indian Patents Act, 1970”. GATE SUPPORTING STRUCTURE : The automatic swing gate is supported on RC.C piers, which hold a pair of trunnion girders, a pair of anchor girders for two way self locking system and anchor frames for side seal seats. The ill beam is fixed in the weir crest. The gate transfers part of water load acting on it as well as part of its self weight to the RCC piers through the trunnion girders in closed position. The remaining part of water load and self weight in closed position is transferred by gate to weir body wall through the sill beam, In partially and fully open positions, the entire water load as well as its self weight is transferred by the gate to RCC piers through trunnion girders. A RCC service bridge is normally provided for facilitating maintenance works like painting & changing of seals, as well as operation of gate by travelling wire rope drum hoists. Anchor Girder for self locking system Rec Bridge Trunnion Girder Side Seal Seat with its anchor frame RCC Pier Weir body wall OPERATION WITH EMERGENCY HOISTS (CONTROLLED MODE) : ‘A manual or powered traveling wire rope drum hoist running over monorail supported by a gantry structure is provided on all projects for enabling emergency opening and closing operations of gate. Any gate can be opened with this hoist -for maintenance purposes or for letting out water to sea side and regulating outflow, when u/s water level is below predetermined opening level. MAINTENANCE : Annual maintainance includes painting, changing damaged rubber seals (if any), checking and calibrating self locking system & lubrication of bush bearings of trunnion hubs. The traveling wire rope drum hoist needs to be checked & serviced at least once in a year. Normally 2 units ( 1 for ‘operation + 1 standby) are provided on every project ‘SPECIAL CONFIGURATIONS : The automatic swing gate system can also be customized and provided in many special configurations, depending on needs and requirements. On tidal regulators with large gate sizes are involved, or where frequent outflow regulation is 2 requirement, powered fixed wire rope drum hoists or hydraulic hoists can be provided to all the gates. These hoists can be used to regulate outflow by opening one or more gates to required extent and holding them in that position, when u/s levelis below predetermined opening level.
