NARRATIVE REPORT #1

A Lecture Series on Geotechnical Engineering was held on August 8-9, 2019 at

Performing Arts Theater, 6th floor, Engineering Complex, USTP CDO. It was conducted by CE
Department-USTP CDO in partnership with Philippine Institute of Civil Engineers (PICE),
United States Agency International Development (USAID), RTI International, International
Geosynthetics Society, and Boysen. Dr. Dennes Bergado, Dr. Glen Lorenzo, Dr. Casan King
Sampaco, Dr. Panich Voottipruex, and Dr. Marolo Alfaro are the resource speaker in this said
event. Dr. Dennes Bergado is a Professor Emeritus at Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok,
Thailand. Dr. Glen Lorenzo is a Civil Engineering professor at Mindanao State University in
Marawi City, LDS, Philippines. Dr. Casan King Sampaco is a Principal Geotechnical Engineer at
Jacobs Engineering Group from USA. Dr. Panich Voottipruex is a Civil Engineering professor at
King Mongkut’s University of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand. And Dr. Marolo Alfaro is a
Civil Engineering professor at University of Manitoba in Canada. It was a honor to all Civil
Engineering students to join this event especially that the said speakers are competent in the field
of Civil Engineering.

On day 1 (August 8, 2019), the event started by singing an invocation and national
anthem leaded by Sanhimig Chorale. Dr. Consorcio Namoco (VCASA, USTP CDO) and Engr.
Achilles B. Pimentel (PICE CDO President) were delivered their welcome remarks. Then a
welcome dance leaded by Gintong Amihan. For Academe-Industry Career Sessions, Engr.
Zenaida T. Tan (Regional Director, DPWH Region X), Engr. Rojien V. Morcilla (OIC Dean,
CEA), an Mr. Dominic M. Barnachea (Institutionalization Manager, STRIDE) talk about Career
Pathways in Civil Engineering Profession, USTP Response to Industry’s Needs (Professional
Science Masters) and other PSM Program and STRIDE Initiatives. Engr. Nestor Ybanez
(Chairperson, CE Dept) introduced the 5 resources speakers for 2-days event. Dr. Dennes
Bergado discussed about Experiences of Soil/Ground Improvements and Erosion Control
Measures. Dr. Casan King Sampaco discussed about The Panama Canal Expansion Program:
Geotechnical Aspects of Design and Construction and The 1-5 Everett Freeway Expansion
Design-Build Project, Washington, USA. And Dr. Marolo Alfaro discussed about
Instrumentation, Monitoring and Numerical Modeling of Geotechnical Infrastructures.

On day 2 (August 9, 2019), the event started by an intermission number leaded by

Sanhimig Chorale. Dr. Casan King Sampaco discussed about The Golden Ears Bridge Design-
Build Project: Foundation System for Segment 4 Approach Structures and Bridge Design and
Construction on Difficult Ground Conditions: Case of Unnamed Creek Bridge in British
Columbia, Canada. Dr. Glen Lorenzo discussed about Special Characteristics of Alluvial
Deposits Essential to the Design and Construction of Infrastructures. Dr. Panich Voottipruex
discussed about Deep Cement Mixing (DCM) Method in Thailand. After all the technical
sessions, there was an open forum that was questioned about the problems and improvements
with their projects.

Throughout the technical session, there was a lot of information put into the mind of the
participants since each word uttered by the speaker was meaningful so each of us listened very
well to his lecture like what the undersigned did when they was discussing its lecture. In short,
this seminar was not a typical day for the Civil Engineering faculty and students instead a day for
them to cherish or remember as they formulate a new case study for qualitative research.

NARRATIVE REPORT #2

Last August 19, 2019 on sunny day, we were doing an inspection regarding with this
subject inside USTP Campus. It was currently constructed of the Design Engineering and
Fabrication Laboratory. It was started last January 5, 2019 and supposedly date of completion
last May 04, 2019. Due to circumstances, it was extended until it will completed. The building
was cost Php 21,475,297.25 with the contractor of JH Pameron Construction and Enterprises,
Inc. from Pagadian City, Zamboanga del Sur. As I observed, their construction workers has lack
of PPE and it will look dangerous to look at while they are doing their jobs. During our
inspection, they done with Break Ground, Excavation, Foundation, and so forth. I hope that this
project will be done strongly and successfully.
