XX¢ sidcle: Boulez, Stockhausen, Xenakis.
musique.
diinfluences encore fortement perceptibles (Debussy, Ravel,
Roussel).

fameux oiseau noir 4 bec jaune, qu’on rencontre non seulement
The Flute at the Conservatoire de Paris
Founded in 1795, the Conservatoire de Paris, the most
important institution for the teaching of music in France,
soon acquired international influence. In obedience to the
principles of the Revolution, teaching there has always been
free of charge and wind instruments have had an important
place. The Conservatoire holds competitions every year, On
‘completing their studies, the instrumentalists play a com-
pulsory piece and, if successful, win a second or first prize,
The repertoire for wind instruments being more limited than
that for piano or strings, the pieces for the former were
written by the teacher of the class concerned, They served
above all to highlight the candidates’ technical ability and
were of little musical interest compared to the great works
for the piano or the violin.
‘At the end of the nineteenth century the then director
‘Théodore Dubois had the idea of commissioning the piece
from a new composer each year. He worked with Paul
Taffanel, the flute teacher of that period, who revolutionized
the playing of our instrument and founded the modern
school of French flute playing which came to be considered
the best in the world, In collaboration with Taffanel, Dubois
imposed a style on the pieces which, while it certainly
reflected the fabulous technique and lightning tonguing
characteristic of that school, nevertheless gave priority to
elegant phrasing, versatility of tone and the sensitivity of the
young musicians, He put an end to “vain warblings and cheap
flourishes in poor taste” (Taffanel). The tradition has been
maintained to our day and we owe it a great number of
interesting pieces.
The petiod which concerns us here runs from 1940 to 1960,
cr, more precisely, from the time of the appointment in 1941 of
Claude Delvincourt to head the famous Conservatoire,
Delvincourt, a composer and a World War | hero, was
appointed during the Occupation, He brought a breath of fresh
air into the Conservatoire, introducing reforms which opened
the institution to the outside world. While an effective
administrator, he was also close to his pupils and formed the
Cadets’ Orchestra and choir which saved many students from
deportation to labour camps in Germany. He created new
disciplines (for example, the teacher training section) and took
part in the revival of ancient music by starting a harpsichord
class. He organized exchanges with schools in other countries
and he put Olivier Messiaen in charge of a class from which
were to graduate such shining lights of the twentieth century
as Boulez, Stockhausen and Xenakis,
Where the examination pieces were concerned Delvin-
court had a twofold aim: to compel young composers to
study the instruments more thoroughly and to give thestudents contemporary music of quality on which to work, the
ever greater demands of which would ensure that the French
school of flute would progress. “Have no pity, pile on the
dificulties” was his recommendation to the young composers.
The pieces of that period, thus, are broad in range and of
demanding virtuosity where both fingering and tongue
technique are concerned (double and triple tonguing and
flutter-tonguing); yet they are also full-fledged musical works,
litle masterpieces that have become classics for the flute.
Before we speak of these pieces in detail we cannot fall to
mention the work of Gaston Crunelle, who was appointed
professor of flute, also in 1941. He worked with the
composers to shed light on certain specific features, such as
the required breaths, and even played some of the pieces in
concert with the composer at the plano. Over the twenty-
eight years of his teaching career Gaston Crunelle could
boast of 135 prizes won by his pupils in the Conservatoire
Eugene Bozza was born in Nice in 1905 and died in
Valenciennes in 1991, He studied the violin, conducting and
composition at the Conservatoire de Paris. He was
conductor of the Opéra Comique from 1939 to 1948 and later
director of the Valenciennes Conservatoire. Although he left
us several operas, ballets and major symphonies and choral
works, he is chiefly known today for his many pieces for wind
instruments, For the flute there is a Concertino da camera, a
quartet entitled Summer’s Day in the Mountains and several
Pieces for solo flute or flute with piano accompaniment. His
style shows to a high degree the qualities of French music of
the period: tunefulness, refined harmony, formal elegance and
2 perfect knowledge of the instrumen
Agrestide, the first comp from Delvincourt’s
time, is dedicated "to my friend Gaston Crunelle”. It is very
dificult and represents a radical break with the pieces of the
preceding years, The title derives from the Latin agrestis,
rustic or rural, and the piece is in three parts: a moderato in
the style of a pastorale, in which the flute weaves loose,
melancholy arabesques as luxuriant as those of Ravel (it is
reminiscent of the sala fram Naphnis and Chloe), culminates in
a lengthy cadenza. A loose, flowing andantino serves as an
interlude, The sextuplets on the piano, like a distant lament,
allow the calm penetrating sound of the flute to float over
them. The third part, an animato, is introduced by a great
descending arpeggio on the piano, right out of Maurice
Ravel's Tzigane. As for the main theme, in 5/8 time, marked
“light and lively", itis inspired by the Sonatina “Games” for
flute and piano written by Jacques Ibert in 1923. Are these
disguised tributes, witty allusions or do they betray the
pressure of an urgent commission?
Pierre Sancan, born in 1916, was a brilliant student at the
Paris Conservatoire, who carried off five first prizes. After
winning the Prix de Rome in 1943, he somewhat neglected his
career asa composer to devote himself to an equally brilliant
cone as a concert pianist. A much sought-after teacher, in 1956
he was appointed professor of piano at the famous
Conservatoire. He nevertheless found the time to write an
opera, three ballets and a concerto for piano.
is Sonatina, composed for the 1946 competition, is in
three linked sections: 2 moderato whose musical curve
resembles Ravel's Sonatina for piano; an andante espressivo,
followed by a brillant cadenza, as the competition required;
and an anmated finale in B minor, a moto perpetuo of triplets
in which the flute uses flutter-tonguing to humorous effect.
The piece concludes by echoing the theme of the first
movement, as Claude Debussy does in his Sonata for flute,
viola and arp.
Henri Dutilleux, also born in 1916, has become one of
the important composers of our time, thanks to a personal
style that sets him apart from al the avant-garde schools Like
Messiaen, he worked on music and time and, like Jolivet, he
believed in the sacred and mystical nature of music. A great
orchestrator of incomparable skill in suggesting atmosphere,
he is responsible for some great orchestral frescoes:
‘Metaboles, Timbres Space Movement, two symphonies, a cello
concerte entitled “A Whole Far-off World” and a violin
concerto called “The Tree of Dreams”, as well as vocal music
and piano pieces, among them an important Sonata. In his
youth he wrote some competition pieces for the Conser-
vatoire (for flute, oboe, bassoon and trombone) with a playful
side to them that he soon abandoned.
The Scnatina, competition piece for 1943, is divided in the
same way as Sancan’s, but itis far more dramatic and already
reveals the great talent of its young composer, despite the
still clearly perceptible influence of Debussy, Ravel and
Roussel. An allegretto in 7/8 time, rendered mysterious by its
choice of mode, reminds us even of Prokofiev in the pianistic
writing and harmonic language. An andante espressivo
sostenuto precedes a lively finale that begins with a threaten-ing introduction on the piano and then yields to an F major
theme marked to be played gaily and in an almost childlike
manner. The cadenza, with its great arpeggios using the flute's
entire range, is followed by a coda in which a progressive
accelerando and crescendo bring the work to an imposing
conclusion of great effect for the purposes of the competition.
Raymond Gallois-Montbrun was born in Saigon, then
part of French Indo-China, in 1918, On arriving in France, he
entered the Paris Conservatoire where he studied the violin,
theory and composition. He was a brilliant violinist, who
after the War embarked on a career that took him all over
Europe, Africa and Japan. His accompanist on the piano was
none other than Pierre Sancan. In 1957 he became Director
of the Conservatoire de Versailles and then, in 1962 Director
of the Paris Conservatoire where he remained for twenty-
‘one years, continuing the work of Claude Delvincourt. The
catalogue of his works includes sonatas, concertos, sym-
phonic poems and an opera da camera that in inspiration is
often reminiscent of his native Orient.
The Divertssement is an unpretentious plece, shorter and
less technically demanding than the three preceding works.
Dedicated to Gaston Crunelle “as a testimony of my great
friendship”, it begins with an andante in which the piano gives
usa sober melody in A minor that the flute repeats over and
over in a harmony with surprising dissonances. The principal
theme of the finale in D major plays skilfully with inverted
chromatics (one motif turns on the ambiguity of C/C#); it
alternates with an elegant, refined waltz in A minor of
typically French charm.
Born in Toulouse in 1925, Charles Chaynes studied
composition at the Paris Conservatoire with Jean Rivier and
Darius Miltaud, He won the Grand Prix de Rome, the Grand
Prix Musical of the City of Paris and the Prize of the
UNESCO-sponsored International Rostrum of Composers.
His catalogue comprises about seventy-five works ranging
from pieces for solo instrument to symphonies, among them
two operas, “Erzsebet” from 1983 and “Blood Wedding” from
1988. Charles Chaynes also enjoyed a more than thirty-year
career in radio, directing and producing first for the ORF
and then for Radio-France.
‘The Japanese “tanka” is a short poem of 31 syllables. It has
five lines with 5,7,5,7 and 7 feet each. Chaynes drew his
inspiration from the tanka “Starry Sky” written by the poet
Hitomaro in the eleventh century.
In the ocean of the sky
(On the waves of the clouds
The vessel of the moon
Seems to be sailing
Through a forest of stars
The piano presents the theme alone in a twelve-tone
series closely following the metre of the poem. Then come
five variations in which Chaynes, abandoning any strict
system, gives free rein to his emotions and creates a musical
illustration of the poem, He resorts to various techniques,
such as favoured notes (Ab, G, Ff), ostinati in the piano
accompaniment or open fifths to give an oriental flavour. The
variations are alternately lyrical and pensive or emphatically
rhythmic,
Throughout his career, Olivier Messiaen clearly
revealed himself as a leading light of twentieth-century music.
He was a brilliant theoretician who embarked on patient
research into Hindu rhythms and into birdsong, which he
would note down carefully out in the fields at any time of day
or night. "Birds are the greatest musicians in the world”, he
maintained. Being deeply religious and a fervent Catholic he
felt that the contemplation of nature was a way of drawing
nearer to God. While Messiaen was a great organist and a
revolutionary teacher ~ | mentioned earlier his class at the
Paris Conservatoire — he left relatively few works, about
sixty in all; each, however, is a personal and significant
composition. His great opera St. Francis of Assisi, first
performed in Paris in 1983, sums up his entire work. Honours
‘were showered upon him. He has given us an account of his
ideas in several of his writings, in particular in the Treatise on
Rhythm, Colour and Ornithology. When he agreed to his old
friend Claude Delvincourt’s request that he write the
competition piece for the flute in 1952, it was of course the
song ofa bird that came to his mind
“A bird everyone knows, the famous Blackbird, with its
yellow bill that can be met with not only in the countryside
but also nowadays in our town gardens. The characteristic
beauty of the Blackbird’s song is one of inverted phrases
‘ending on a rise, Its song, at once solemn and mocking, is
based, if not on a super-major mode, at any rate on the use
of the major third, the fourth and the major sbcth and the
augmented fourth. Every spring each Blackbird invents a
number of themes which it adopts and adds to its earlier
tunes; the older the bird the richer its repertoire of melodiesand the tunes are peculiar to each individual bird.” he told
Claude Samuel.
‘Against a background of mystery, suggested by a chromatic
scale in the extreme lower register of the piano, the flute
enters with a cadenza which recalls the bird's song made up of
swift strokes, rapid détachés, different forms of at:ack and
flutter-tonguing, In the second part, which is almost slow, and
tender, the atmosphere becomes calmer. A sweet melody, like
a lament, is sung in alternating verses first by the piano, then
by the flute. We must point out that in this melody Messiaen
quotes a passage from the fourth Incantation “For serene
communion between the soul and the creation” a key work of
André Jolivet’s. What better tribute could he pay tis friend
who loved the flute so much? The second part culminates in
those famous “colour chords” of Messiaen’s and is folowed by
a short transitional passage of incisive trills. Then the same
pattern resumes: the identical background, a new cadenza,
almost slow, tender (this time in canon, each instrument
entering at shorter and shorter intervals), “colour chords” and
a transition a fourth higher. The brief finale is an extremely
complex piece of writing, reflecting the research on rhythm
and serial techniques that Messiaen did in the 1950s. The flute
adopts the style of a bird and many grace notes ornament a
staccato line of selected sounds (A,G,GH) each in 2 specific
register. In the piano part a complex counterpoint is the result
Cf superimposing two lines of a twelve-tone series. The right,
hand plays the initial form, the left hand the retrograde
inversion, These series are transposed three times and use
every possible combination of the semiquaver, quaver, dotted
quaver, crotchet rhythm and, what is more, in serial fashion.
Then Messiaen repeats ital in inverted counterpoint (the two
hands change over). By way of conclusion, great chords sink
towards the deep register, while the Blackbird flies away
victorious and triumphant.
‘André Jolivet, who was three years older than Messiaen,
became his friend in 1936 when, with Lesur and Baucrier, they
formed the music group Jeune France. This group was founded
con principles of humanism and in opposition to abstract or
frivolous music. Although he did not practise any religion,
Jolivet shared with Messiaen a deep spirituality and sought to
compose “music that has recovered its ancient, original
meaning from the time when it was the magic and incantatory
expression of the religious sentiments of human societies”
Jolivet did not attend the Conservatoire, but was from a very
early age drawn to the arts of painting, the theatre and music,
After becoming a primary-school teacher, he began to learn
composition with Paul Le Flem and then became the sole pupil
of Edgard Varése. His work, unfortunately still not well known
today, comprises all genres from solo pieces to works for
large orchestra. But the flute was his favourite instrument. “I
chose the flute which is par excellence The Instrument of
Music; that is because the flute is animated by a breath, an
emanation from the depths of the human being and it imbues
its notes with what in us is at once visceral and cosmic", he
said, He wrote fifteen pieces between 1936 and 1972, some of
them among the most significant written for our instrument.
The origins of Linus, who appeared quite late in Greek
mythology, are obscure. According to some, he was the son of
Apollo and one of the Muses; to others, Hercules’ tutor and
the rival of Apollo. Others again maintained that he was the
inventor of rhythm and melody and met his death in a musical
contest with Hercules. The Song of Linus appears for the first
time in Homer's liad. Jolivet defines it as “a type of threnody
in Greek antiquity: a funeral lament, a song of sadness,
interrupted by cries and dances”. The Song of Linus was the
piece for the [944 competition, the winner of which was none
‘other than Jean-Pierre Rampal. It is composed of several short
contrasting parts, The laments (5 beats to the bar) are calm,
but full of pain; the cries (3 beats to the bar) agitated and
frenzied; the dances (7 beats) are built around a Greek rhythm :
the epitritos ()JJ), which is unusually lively. Jolivet also uses
original Greek modes (a finale in the authentic mode on D) or
invents them, superimposing various tetrachords. The result is
a spellbinding work, of amazing and bewitching power. It is
certainly the most demanding competition piece, but also one
of the most accomplished in the flute repertoire.
