PART II

1. Studying the life and works of Jose Rizal made me realize a lot of things, including the
importance of art in our life. Degrading the value of art is a common issue that a lot of artists
face even up to these days. Most people failed to realize the role of art in our lives. That’s why I
am awed to the speech given by Jose Rizal to Luna and Hidalgo, although Rizal is an artist
himself. I love how emphasized the beauty of it, and the glory it brought to our country. A lot of
artists are being discouraged to create or perform art because the value it cost don’t equate the
praises and recognition being given to it. Not to mention that art is not common during those
days because most people give importance to guns and power. I’m just happy that Luna and
Hidalgo received the amount of recognition that they deserve.

Second, patriotism or love for your country can be portrayed in various ways. It is a
common misconception that loving your country is equivalent to dying for it, which is totally
wrong. Patriotism can be done by standing up to a bully who brings dishonor to your country; by
carrying or representing the name of your country to competition locally or internationally that
may bring honor to your home; by using your voice that will contribute to the change that this
country needs; and by doing things that may bring dishonor to your country. We are so used to
violence that we thought that the only way to show love is by dying because of it. Luna and
Hidalgo may not be able to showcase their talent in swordsmanship by killing some of colonizer
but they were able to show their love by bringing with them the pride and honor of being a
Filipino.

Lastly, is to know when to act and always be brave. Rizal, Luna, and Hidalgo are only
three of the Filipinos who stood up when they needed to be. Despite of the power being used
against our fellowmen during that time, they did what they think is smart during that time. Unlike
the others, they did not use swords, guns and the likes. Instead, they use their talent to educate
the sleeping hearts of the Filipino and created their masterpiece that served as eye-opener to
many. This is a clear manifestation of if there’s a will, there’s a way. The three find their way and
succeed.

2.

To young women of this generation,

You had enough of your time, now, the time has come for you to accept the blessings of
womanhood and functioned fully with its knowledge and use the power bestowed on you as a
woman. I know staying on top of your game can be tiring, eating well, building a career, going to
school, drinking lots of water, reading good books and especially to look beautiful enough to
suffice the ill-standards of society can be frustrating.

Women are required to wear several hats in their life – a daughter, student, mother,
girlfriend, sister, career woman, choir girl etc. These roles come with a responsibility at your
hand. Despite of these amazing roles that you carry within you, society never fail to remind you
on how you should act and think as a woman. According to society, you have to be more
conservative, less opinionated, obedient, and literally have no voice. You don’t have to be overly
ambitious. It will scare men away they say, AS IF, you need them.

These existing standards are what the countless generations of women before us have
fought to break, to make a change. We shouldn’t allow them, especially men, to dictate what we
should be. If we let them to treat us like slaves whom they can command freely, then those
fights would be all for nothing.

My ultimate desire as a woman is to see us embrace ourselves first, including our flaws
and imperfection because only until then that we could finally break the chains of society that
have been on our neck ever since we are a kid. It is important for you to get to know and accept
yourself. Accepting yourself is vital because it will avoid you from getting envious of other
women and it will strengthen your desire to cheer and empower them without fear of being
under. Know that you are beautiful and powerful, commit to your own success and be bold
about it.

Remember that you don’t have to choose between having a beautiful body and beautiful
soul. You can have both. Imagine how it will radiate and how many lives will you change
because of that spirit.

Woman, yourself need you to fight for the life you deserve. If you really want
something, then go get it. You are capable, you are strong. It may not be immediate but
eventually, you will get it; only if you allow yourself to have the chance to be the great
woman that you are. The only permission you need to be great is yours. Success knows
no gender. You don’t need anyone to validate you. Don’t lower your ambitions just
because the society demands you to. That’s not how it works. Your purpose is bigger
than gender itself. Keep that in mind.
