I really liked the fact that my colleague has very well associated the protagonist of this short story

with
the women of the Victorian era. It is very interesting, and Georgeta has pointed out very well, the
intention of the author with this work, that is, that of making the world see how unhappy women were
at that time in a marriage. Most of them had to live as slaves in a marriage that did not bring them
happiness; the only thing that the marriage brought them was the desire to someday be able to escape
from that "jail" and most of them preferred to kill themselves instead of living that submissive life. This
represented the only way in which they could be free.

I really liked the interpretation that my colleague has done, because at that time the woman had to be
submissive to her husband, always do what he wanted regardless of the opinion of the woman; men has
long been considered superior to women until it has been shown that women can be on the same level
as a man or even above a man in many ways. The easiest solution to escape that unhappiness was
through death, in this way they would be free and without having to obey the rules imposed by a
husband.
