CHAPTER
Controt of Hydraulic Energy
Working energy transifitted hydraulically must be
directed and under complete contol at alltime. t
"ot under control, no useful work willbe done or a
machine might be destroyed. One of the advan-
tages of hydraulcsisthat energy can be controled A
relatively easly by using valves.
Avaheisamechanicaldevice consisting ofabody
and an internal moving pant which connects and
cisconnects passages within the body. The pas-
‘sages in hydraulic valves cary quid. The action
of the moving part controls maximum system 7
pressure, direction of flow, and rate of flow.
control of pressure
Hydraulic energy can be applied to a cylinder
actuator, resuting in the periormance of work.
‘Once the cylinder is fully extended and the work is
‘completed, a positive displacement pump willoon-
tinue to absoro more energy from ts prime mover
and apply ahigherpressuretotheliquid. (Remem-
ber, the smallest resistance in the system signals
‘the pump what pressureis tobe applied.) With the
cylinder fully extended, the smabest resistance
‘becomes the physical strength of the system,
‘The pump willy to apply a pressure to overcome
this resistance which wouldbe damaging. One use
of apressure valveis to limit system pressure toa
sale level.
[Pressure control valve
‘A pressure control valve has an internal moving
bart which is operated by pressure. When the
pressure in a systemreaches a certain level, the bestoueit Seeng
‘internal moving part connects or disconnects pas- P— seca Por

what a pressure control
valve consists of
‘A pressure control valve consists of a valve body
with a primary and secondary passage and an
internal moving par (spools). The extemal open
ings of the passages are known as primary and

|npressure control valves, the spoolis held biased
in one extreme position by a spring. Ii the pas-
‘Sages are disconnected and the tlow path through
the body is blocked in is normal condition, the
valve is designated a normally non-passing pres

ormally non-passing pressure valve used in this
manner is called a relief valve.
contro! of actuator direction
Once 2 cylinders extended, thas tobe retracted
0 that work can be done again,
‘Te periorm this task, a cylinder which is operated
hydraulically in both directions is generally used,
as well a5 something to change the direction of
liquid flow.
double-scting cylinder
‘A double-acting cinder has a port at each end of
the yinder body by which fuid can enter an ext.

(Soubie-acting). To aistinguish the ports on a
ouble-acting cylinder, we wil label one “A” the
other "8."
